High CPU Utilization
Hello,
I'm running VIA EPIA EN12000EG with 1GB of RAM on Windows XP. There are no major software applications installed. I've noticed that any time I fire up an application, the cpu jumps to 100% and stays there. It takes much longer than usual for the app to present itself. Looking at the active processes, it's always the app I fire up that takes 100% and runs forever that way. Eventually it dips, but that's when I'm not using the app. I've installed Vista and have the same problem.
Thoughts?
thanks in advance,

Try adding another Gb of RAM. Chris.

I would guess 1GB is sufficient enough especially when no other applications are running and I've turned several services off. The board apparently only supports "up to 1GB of DDR2"

Is Windows fully updated along with drivers for all your hardware and what speed are the harddrives running at?

Much longer than usual, compared to what? The VIA Eden 1.2GHz is not even equivalent to an 800MHz Intel Celeron from 2002, except for its encryption engine performance.
Could be a BIOS or driver issue, do you have the latest BIOS?
BIOS V1.09 for EPIA EN
Latest drivers:
CN700 Chipset (includes IDE/SATA storage drivers)
UniChrome Pro Graphics
Vinyl AC97 Audio (VT1618 Codec)
Velocity Gigabit Controller (VT6122)
Otherwise, I tend to wonder whether you are seeing normal performance for this class of CPU.

1 GB of RAM is working. But if I understand correctly you are using a motherboard with on board video that will share the RAM and therefore Vista will have less than 1 GB it can use. That you will notice. One of my housemates had 1 GB minus 256 MB for the onboard effectively leaving 768 for Vista. That made Vista use the pagefile wat too much. Adding extra RAM did the trick.
I agree with Mr Chris to add 1 GB of RAM will make Vista more responsive.
But the same thing happens under XP with 1 GB of RAM so there must be something else going on.
What is the transfer mode in which the IDE channel is working?
