How much of a difference does Vista have in 3dmark'06 compared with XP ? is it a huge drop by a couple thousand marks or just a few hundred?

Bench marks really mean nothing Mike. What does matter is real world gaming, and Vista and XP are now dead even, with Vista actually pulling ahead at times. I posted a article in the Tech arena, so you might want to give it a read.

To answer your question outright, yes XP is faster then Vista in 3D Mark 06, but that bench mark was designed for XP. You do have a drop in score but nothing you would see in the real world.

hmm im getting more and more interested in upgrading to Vista by the day :P i read what you said about Vista SP1 and XP SP3 now being on par .

I play TF2 , CoD4 , UT3 mostly..and a bit of WoW. Also Conan in a few days. How well do these games play on Vista compared with XP ?

I play TF2, COD4 and UT3 and they are all max quality, and perform great. The problem early on with Vista was mostly due to poor drivers ( Nvidia drivers), that has now been solved.

Ahh i see. So do you get like 60 FPS in TF2, 40 ish in CoD4 (30 in MP) and the same in UT3? Thats what i get atm .

Im just worried that if i do switch to Vista , then ill get lower frames and other problems.

I never measured the FPS, but they all play on high settings with no problems.

Ah fair enough. Atm i only have a copy of Vista basic(lol) with an "upgrade anytime" disc that lets me upgrade to Premium at a lower cost...i think. So ill have to wait until i can get a copy of premium and also a new Hard Drive (only have 40Gb left) . I may also go up to 4Gb of RAM

Does Vista Basic provide less performance or is their just less features which make it worthless?

btw, turns out i can upgrade my Basic to Premium for $80 . Not sure if thats any cheaper though.
