Default Windows Vista

Ok , so ive had my PC for about a month now and everything has been going great, no real problems or anything ( just messy cables and dust )

Now, ive decided i want to get DX10 for the newer games that are out such as UT3, Bioshock etc. all of which run flawlessy on my system with DX9 , maybe its time i upgraded to Vista?

I have a copy of Basic with an Upgrade disc to upgrade to , i think its premium, but i only have 2 Gb of Crucial Ballistix Memory . My question is should i Upgrade to Vista and if so get another 2 Gb which will keep my system running optimally with vista installed?

Mike.

If you are using 32bit Vista I would leave it at 2GBs (SP1 for Vista 32bit will let Windows see upto 4GB of memory but I don't know if it uses it all)

If you are using 64bit yes I would upgrade to 4GB.

It does not change how much memory is utilized, only Vista's awareness of how much memory is physically installed. This change only affects 32-bit Vista and only if the BIOS properly supports the method that Vista will rely on for this new awareness. Many users will see no change because their BIOS doesn't match up with what Vista SP1 is looking for.

Your board supports 64 bit. So for a modest fee, you can ask MS to give you the 64 bit dvd.

Get your 4 gigs and have fun!!

I would also recommend the 64bit version Mike. Thats what a lot of us guys with super rigs use.

Whatever you decide, in contrast to popular believe, 2 GB is more than enough to normally run Vista. Except if you plan to heavily edit video and photo's ofcourse.

Because of the low memory prices, adding 2GB is not a bad idea ofcourse, but it's not required.

Beware that the 64bit version could potentially have more problems with drivers, since 64bit driver support by manufacterers is not as good as 32bit AND unsigned drivers simply will not install.

Things have changed since Sisko.

I'm running 64 and all is working. Besides X86 compatibility with SP1 is way better than it was.

Straight and to the point:

If you want Vista because of it's *glory* in games, stay with XP.

DX10, for now, is not going to give you anything you don't already have, and this comes from a Vista user since the day it was released.
