Default Vista will not install 5.20b

I currently have 5.12 installed for my Envy24 card. I have tried opening the zip file for the 5.20b and can not even with several different programs. I have tried running the setup.exe from the zip file and that will not install the new driver, either. I have deleted the old driver completely (and even get the message no sound card available...or something like that) and did an install, but Vista keeps installing the 5.12. I EVEN TRIED running the setup.exe while the computer was looking for a new driver, hoping it would see something in the zip file. NADA.

Everything else checks out as another tech support group looked into my DxDiag and MSINFO32 files - the only thing is that the driver needs to be updated.

How the heck do I get that new driver to install if I can not unzip it, it won't install automatically nor will Vista recognize it within the zip file? pianistgail@yahoo.com

pianistgail,

Windows has a built-in app for unzipping .zip files. You should not need to use any other program. After double clicking the .zip file, you need to designate (to the unzip app) that you want to unzip the file and also indicate the location to which you want to place the unzipped files. Did you perform the unzip process in that fashion?

If you performed the unzip function properly, then ran the setup.exe file, and Windows didn't install the driver, then it's possible you have the improper driver file for your card. It's hard to tell about these situations from a distance.

Consider that you don't need to install a new driver just because there is a new driver available. You should be installing new drivers (a) when there is a problem you're trying to fix with the driver you've got, or (b) when you've carefully read the new features list on the driver you're planning to install, and you've decided it's worth the risk of upgrading. Those are the only reasons for installing a new driver. Installing drivers can cause problems.

I am having problems with my sound in an online game that I play. Their tech support is the one that said I needed the updated driver because everything else looked fine.

The only two programs I have to open zip files is WIN and a program I bought that includes one called 12 Ghosts. Neither program will open the zip file. I went under the "open with" option and WIN is the only one that showed up.

I doubt it is the improper driver for my card, but if you have a better suggestion, I'm open.

pianistgail,

Here are the instructions from Windows Help and Support in Vista for opening a compressed file:

"Locate the compressed folder that you want to extract files or folders from.

Do one of the following:

1. To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location.

2. To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions."

The above instructions should involve using the Windows built-in compress/decompress utility.
