black screen after update

have fujitsu siemens laptop running XP sp2 with a Via Chrome 9 HC IGP graphic chip. I've been using same driver (6.14.10.71 10/9/2006) since buying machine. so today decided to update driver.
So went to via Microsoft Update to get new driver (6.14.10.133 April 2008). driver downloaded and restarted laptop. after initial setup, screen went black. tried restarting several times but situation. So eventually managed to get laptop to go into SafeMode and 'rolled back' driver. Restarted laptop and everything back to normal.

Was I wrong in trying to update? "If it aint broke dont fix it!!"

Microsoft Update has a bad habit of doing just that. I never recommend using them for driver updates. Check Fujitsu's website and see what driver the recommend.

Or, if you can post the model of your onboard graphics (usually the number of the mainboard will do) we can see if there is a newer driver here at this site. Chris.
