Default Installing a new Ati video card on Via chipset.

This is how to install a new video card.*my way*

1: Before you start check you have the latest bios and motherboard drivers installed. (what Via version you use is upto you.)

2: Once you have done that remove the drivers and software from your previous video card and power down (turn off the power, ie: pull the plug). If you have onboard video check the manual on how to disable it.

3: Remove the old and insert the new card, connect the monitor cable and I always clear the bios, now with the power turn off to the monitor, power up the computer and listen for the bios beep, once that happens turn the power on to the monitor and go into the bios to adjust your settings. Use the save and exit.

4: Boot into windows and cancel any driver install programs so the standard VGA driver gets installed.

5: I use windows XP so make sure it is updated to SP1 with the latest DX.

6: Now check the Via driver installed by checking the Regedit.
To check with the regedit do the following
Open Start - Run and type in regedit. Double click

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SOFTWARE and check the listing under

VIA and/or VIA4in1Driver.

7: Check in the device manager also to see if all is OK.
If everthing is fine now install the Ati driver (I use the 4.4 cats) with windows explorer and AV software turned off. Reboot then install the control panel, reboot.

8: Just to be safe run chkdsk and DX diag, then try a 3D program.

Of course some hardware has problems but this way worked for me with no problems.

If you have 1GB of ram installed make sure the memory is set to programs in my computer properties under advance.

If you have anything more to add, feel free to comment

Also read Ati's FAQ's for bios setups, etc and post here if you need anymore info, and I will try to help.

AGP driver is part of the VIA Hyperion drivers (4 in 1) and can be found here

Ati catalyst drivers

What to check installed Via's driver versions, check here web page supplied by Zardoc (Via forum member)

EDIT: inclued Ati, Via, and Zardoc web links.

Default RE:Installing a new Ati video card on Via chipset.

How I installed my new Ati video card on Via chipset motherboard

1) start with a mainboard, not an 'antique' mainboard, or something dredged up in some 'bargain bin'. The mainboard is the most IMPORTANT part of your computer, the effort and quality put into manufacturing it will affect EVERYTHING you attatch to it.
2) go out and get yourself a DECENT power supply, that power supply that came with your $20 case isn't going to 'cut it', save it for a Celeron, or PIII system, just go out and get a QUALITY 400W+ power supply.
3) if you BOTHERED to pay attention to #1 (above) ALL manufacturers of QUALITY mainboards suggest what memory to use in the manual you got with your mainboard, they do not do this in some evil plan to part you from your hard earned cash, they do this because they want you to be satisfied with their product, so follow their recommendations.
4) SURE you can save 20% by buying a 3rd party ATI video card and it MIGHT work out ok, but what are you going to do if it doesn't?
5) there are many bios settings ahead, if you don't know what something does don't mess with it, if you want to know what the settings do try the bios guide here: http://www.rojakpot.com/
6) install your drivers the RIGHT way (proper order), CAREFULLY choosing what version of driver to install for your specific hardware (DANGER: there is some reading required)
7) RUN 3D mark all you like, but your system is NEVER going to perform like some of the crazies that post their scores there, at least NOT until you can solve your own troubles and have to rely on IDIOTS like myself to get you out of the trouble you have manufactured for yourself.

Edit: Thank you rupertpenjab for your input.

EDIT 2: Just to get feedback, can you post here to say my install order workedor did not help as it worked for me but I don't know if it is helping others out. Thanks, BB.

Default RE:How I installed my new Ati video card on Via chipset motherboard

As of late it seems that every damm ATI card has a desire to 'eat' 2 IRQs. This is mainly due to ATI assigning (by driver) 2 hardware addresses to the 2 monitor outputs found on all the new cards. This allows 'real' multi-monitor display, but can cause a real IRQ 'train wreck' in older systems.
So, it seems that we are back to 486 days, especially with pre KT600 chipsets (W98/ME installs, and 'standard computer' installs), of having to sort out, free up, and watch IRQs to sucessfully install these damm cards (Nvidia cards are no better).

Of course that statement only applies to those countries that ATi actually allow you to buy their own "Made by" product instead of just their chips on someone elses "Powered by" board.

Default RE:How I installed my new Ati video card on Via chipset motherboard

I have updated to Ati 4.5 cats and computer is running fine.

Once I had d/loaded latest driver I went to add/remove and un-installed the control panel, canceled reboot option, un-installed both Ati drivers (pro card) and rebooted back to windows, two video driver install programs pop up so I cancel them, turn off my anti-virus software, install the Ati 4.5 display drivers, rebooted back to windows, turned off AV again, installed the new control panel, rebooted, checked the device manager, DXdiag for errors. All looking good but haven't use any 3D programs yet so let you know in the next couple of days.
