Which driver?

I've a middling problem that's become major headache.

After my PC crashed, I had to reinstall. Spending a day and going through 3 or 4 official Via drivers elicited no response from the silicon monster's maw. After much headbanging & haitpulling, I came across the Vinylv600a (A1u600a)ZIP and got something - -the Chipmunk family!
Be it MP3s, shoutcasts or vanilla PC bells & whistles, they all sounded like they'd overdone it with the laughing gas.
What goes on here?

Any idea an what the motherboard/chipset is?

I'm not at all au fait with hardware and the PC is VERY old with a major upgrade so don't take this as gospel but I blieve it to be an ERX, whatever that is.

I've just noticed alsoin Sys. Info. that there's a "problem" with the PCI Communication Device; I've had this before & it always went away after installing the proper VIA driver.
