Default Asus P4V8X-X and VGASave Problem

I am using an Asus P4V8X-X Motherboard with the latest BIOS Ver 1009.008.
This board uses the VIA P4X533 and VT8237 Chipset.
I installed a new HIS ATI Radeon 9550 AGP 8x 256mb Video Card.
I performed a fresh format on the HDD and a fresh Windows XP Professional install ( probably 10 times trying various things ).
I installed the latest VIA Hyperionpro V515a VIA Chipset Drivers.
Immediately after the windows install I go into Device Manager.
1) There is NO entry for Display Adapters ( To allow me to select Standard VGA Adapter ).
2) There are NO entries in the OTHER entry in Device Manager for Display adapters either.
3) Also in Device Manager > System devices there is a Yellow Flag at the VIA CPU to AGP Controller.
4) When right clicking on the Desktop > Properties > Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Adapter > Properties shows VGASave as the adapter.
PROBLEM :
ATI Catalyst WILL NOT install because error says it needs a Standard VGA Adapter installed ( hence drivers won't install ).
NOTE : I have read all of the Asus, ATI, VIA, and Windows Knowledge Base and Forums. I have performed all of the installation tip and manual install articles also to no avail ( most don't work because I cannot get the Standard VGA Adapter to install ( it is not an option available ).
I have E-Mailed ATI, Asus, etc. but only get the generic SEE FAQ's and Knowledge Base answers.
ATI has suggested returning the card to the Vendor.
I know it works OK because I did in fact get it to work once before upgrading to a new HDD( on this identical hardware and upgrades setup described at the beginning ). It will not install on the new HDD.
Can anyone help ? The real issue is getting rid of VGASave and the Yellow Flag.

I would do another clean install then update Windows to SP2 plus updates. Once that is done check the device manager for VIA CPU to AGP Controller version. I can't remember the version but if it is dated around 2003 it should be right. If there is an error install this older driver Version - 4.56v found at the bottom of this page VIA Arena - Display Drivers Make sure you tick the AGP driver box when using the installer program.

Once installed check the device manager for errors and also check DXdaig.

If error free install the Ati drivers version 7.6 as I have had problems with the later drivers
Previous Catalyst™ Drivers for Windows XP

Sorry I don't have a quick fix.

Also in the bios if you have these options make sure they are enabled before installing Windows.

Allocate IRQ to AGP

Thanks so much for the fast reply. I have already installed windows ( with SP-2 ) probably 10 or 12 times ). I have tried many different versions of VIA drivers from both VIA and the recommended ones from Asus ( Asus 4 in 1 V 4.49 I believe ). I'll review ALL your suggestions and try again. I have been working on this for probably 10 days now. I'll try anything. I've worked on computers for 20 years and never had this much trouble.
