A "don't do this" topic, just for your interest...
I installed a Sata/IDE Raid addon card, I forget why I did that....you are beginning to get the story I am about to tell.
I had 2 Sata hard drives installed on the card with VT6421 chipset and a hard drive would clack quite loudly. After a few...I'm not sure I can go through with this tale...after a few boots and loud clacking but no other noticable problems I took the side off the case and noticed...I can barely finish this story...there were sparks bursting from the PCI slot beneath the #1 Sata card connector. Each time I would hear a clack from the hard drive a large amount of sparks would burst from the PCI slot.
I have not reacted so quickly to turn off a computer in all my 4 years of computing.
I think the lesson I have learned is to connect the master hard drive to the 0 connector on the Sata Raid addon card.
Well, I hope that is the lesson I should have learned.
The instruction booklet does not indicate which slot is the 0 slot nor which slot is the #1 slot and the print is so fine I can not be bothered reading it, though I have tried.
I had a thought this evening to look for the #0 and #1 connectors and I looked at the card and saw them but I still think it will be a little while before I try to use that card again.
...3 months have passed...
