Default Can't get sound

I have just upgraded to WindowsXP that has required some
upgrading of drivers to provide compatibility with WinXP. But
I can't get sound out of my mother board, despite having downloaded
and installed the referenced driver.

WindowsXP

AMD K6-2 500 mhz CPU

Epox MVP3C motherboard

192 mb RAM]

13gbit hard drive

It is very difficult to relate the names of the drivers to their
functions, e.g. which driver is fo the sound card?

I have been through all the steps, trying to add hardware -
having Windows tell me I have new hardware. The device
manager says all functions that have anything to due with audio are
working normally.

please.

I have just upgraded to WindowsXP

XP is not something to 'upgrade' to, it should be 'clean installed' on a formatted hardrive.

What you are going to have to do is inspect your system to see what you have in there for audio, it should be a plug-in card that you will likely have to remove to identify, once identified you can get a driver from the manufacturer (maybe?, some older cards do not have XP drivers).

Here is the manual for the motherboard:
Epox MVP3C
As rupert notes, this board does not have onboard sound. That simply means there is no sound chip integrated into the motherboard. In order to have sound you have to have an add on PCI sound card. If you look at the manual linked above it is set to accept a Creative sound card but that does not mean that is what is on there by any means, another brand could be used. When you figure out what sound card is on there post back and we can direct you to the driver. Try this:
Everest Home Edition
This free utility will ID the card attached to the board along with everything else. Download, install, run. All the info is there. What driver is "referenced", as you say?

Thanks to your good advice, I found my sound card manual, did
some detective work to find the manufacturer whose name was not on
the manual, downloaded new driver, installed and voila! I have
sound. Thanks for the help, case closed.
