A version of 4 in 1 drivers is "native" to Windows XP. Have you tried not installing the 4 in 1 update and leaving it alone? You may also want to try SP2 if that is not included with the OS install. The Microsoft AGP driver will install with SP2 and may run better with your ATI GPU. It is because of problems like this with Via and to some extent, nVidia, that ATI will soon be entering the chipset market.
Welcome to the Via Forum.

You have to run the installer again and choose normal install. Choose "uninstall' for each driver at the prompt to remove the previous version. Old versions of 4 in 1 drivers will not install over new ones. Only the other way around, new over old. Take them off first. That is the only way to remove.

Thanks Jim,

I have downloaded ATI Catalyst (very large download) and
installed it over the VIA 4.55 driver. Seems to be going ok for
now, no lockups yet but same problem with slow startup.

Fixed the slow startup, oh yea- dumb me- didn't
check H/Drive jumper. It was set to Master without a Slave, set it
to cable select and problem solved, no more 30 second wait because
computer now knows thier is only one H/Drive and goes straight to
windows boot.

Add this info incase someone does not take a look at how the
Hard Drive is set!!!

Welcome to the Via Forum.
Jim
Jim are you serious man??
Does this mean that ATI will have there own chipset based motherboards or just new chipset drivers for current chipset manufacturers?
Is there an article about this somewhere?

Hi chunko,

We both have same M/B and Bios version- same cpu - same XP
SP1, my AGP is GeCube ATI Radeon9600XT VIVO - 1 gig PQi ram.

Is their any way I could see your full BIOS setup (screen by
screen) to compair them.

I have a problem with the game Black Hawk Down, it locks up on
the opening play screen.

and it seem like a graphics driver problem, I have the latest
catalyst drivers and they have made I rig more stable apart from HI
res gaming... makes me think the bios may need a tweek.

On ya,

Yeah it does sound like a catalyst issue.
Try the 4.12 or the 5.1 driver and make sure you run driver cleaner in safe mode after you uninstall your current drivers.
Also make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
My BIOS is set to default with the exception of AGP.I have it set to 4.
