Which chipset is currently installed
I'll be upfront, I pretty much have no clue about any of this
stuff.

Based on my dxdiag showing:

Name: VIA CPU to AGP2.0/AGP3.0 Controller
Device ID:
PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_B188&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_00\3&267 A616A&0&08
Driver: C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\VIAAGP1.SYS, 5.00.0000.3442
(English), 7/2/2003 04:42:00, 27904 bytes
Name: VIA Standard PCI to ISA Bridge
Device ID:
PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3227&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_00\3&267 A616A&0&88
Driver: C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys, 5.00.2195.6655
(English), 6/19/2003 14:05:04, 46992 bytes

some people are saying me running the install
(v455vp1.exe) isn't updating my chipset. So, basically
I'm asking if those people know what they're talking about.....and
if so, what can be done?

Thanx

'Chipsets' do not 'update' (much the same way a Chevy can't be 'updated' to a Honda, what you have is what you've got)
Drivers may be 'updated', it all depends on where you are starting, and hoping to go.
Running the 4.45 driver install is going to accomplish NOTHING on an antique.
The #1 place to start is to identify your SPECIFIC hardware (motherboard model and maker and chipset type) then determine a suitable driver based on this information and your SPECIFIC operating system.

Righto, I meant to put this on the original and it slipped my mind:
CPU type and speed: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, ~2.0GHz
Motherboard make and model: Asus KV8 SE Deluxe K8T800
Chipset: that's the K8T800 right?
Video card or integrated graphics solution: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
RAM, amount and speed: DDR 1GB KIT PC3200 HYPERX A -k
Operating system and service packs: Windows 2000 Professional (5.0, Build 2195) Service Pack 4
video card driver version (installed): 6.14.10.6512
VIA 4in1 Hyperion driver version (installed): That's why I'm here I ran the v455vp1 though..so that should be the one installed...

Which chipset is currently installed
K8T800 is the northbridge component of the chipset, VT8237 is the southbridge. See the block diagram at the bottom of this linked page:

Righto. So with that equip and os the v455 is what I should be using? Is there a way to see if it installed properly? Does that info from the dxdiag mean that it didn't update properly?

To see the installed version of 4 in 1 drivers: Click on Start, then Run. In the window type "regedit". When the registry editor opens click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Down the tree to the folder "Software", down the tree to the folder "Via 4 in 1 Driver". Double click to open. The installed version will display in the pane.

I have never had any problems using the latest 4in1
drivers(currently running 4.55) on an old backup rig, which is
running 98SE and has an AMD-761/Via hybrid chipset. Just my
experience.
