Default SD Card for Hard Drive

Hi folks.

How do I use an SD Card (4 GB) for a Hard Drive? I am using a unit to monitor something, and I don't need the speed. I like the small footprint of the VIA motherboard but don't want to have to have moving parts. SSD are too expensive, so I thought using an SD card (or two) might work.

Any ideas?

Cheers

yes, why not? You can buy an internal or external card reader and boot from there. I can't see any problem. As far as I know SD cards have a limited read/write cycles, though.

Smile SD Cards

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

Yes, they do have limited cycles, but it calculates to something like 10 years, so it's way past it's useful time, from what I've been told.

So for something as small as the Pico box (I forget it's name), I can get an internal reader instead of the laptop drive? That would be great. It's rather small.

Cheers

It's not a matter of "years" but write/read/delete cycles. If you use the box as an emule server (for example), I think the sd card would die rather quickly.

Anyway if you are plannig to get an Artigo pico-itx box, you can fit a 2.5" hdd inside.

Default SD Cards

Yes, with an average read/write RATE, that translates to time. It's been discussed over and over again in other forums where I have come across it. They don't die quickly at all.

And as the original posting said, I don't want a drive inside. I'd like the Artigo to work with solid state components, and not an SSD as their pricing is out of touch with reality at the moment.

I thought someone else might have done this, but it doesn't seem so.

I'm glad you already know everything about SD cards advantages and disadvantages. I used a memory card as HD and it get corrupted after a couple of months, but probably I was just unlucky.

anyway as I already said you can connect an external card reader and boot from there or (if it fits the artigo box) get a Compact Flash to IDE Adapter (there are models that fit a 2.5 HD drive bay). Obviously you have to buy a CF memory, not a SD card.

Edit: a quick googling revelead that you can also find IDE to SD adapter.
