Default question about cpu support

hello this is my first post here so forgive me if im posting in the incorrect place. ive got an older via mainboard in my computer that currently has a 1.8ghz processor on it. the board has a 133mhz fsb with 2 gigs of ram currently on it. i tried upgrading the cpu to a 2.66ghz processor yesterday and got a slew of errors, bios wouldnt display text correctly and the machine wouldnt read master or slave drives, and would not load. can you offer any insights as to the cause or solution to this problem using the hardware i have, or is the mainboard just not capable of supporting a 2.6ghz processor? i wouldnt think that a 800mhz increase would be an issue for a pentium 4 board. any help would be appreciated, thank you.

weswelsch

edit- i forgot to say that the computer POST occured without error also. its a bit confusing.

There are a number of Pentium 4 models, they are not all interchangable. You may just need a bios update but it may just not work with your board. Google up some details on your board; chipset, socket type, core voltage, maybe a list of processors that work on your board.
