Default Beginner questions

Hi folks, newbie here as far as VIA and Pico-Itx goes, I have a VIA P700 and well basically wanted to find out is there a best way to go about getting it up and running, should I use an IDE drive, SATA drive what performs better ?

I have a 12V DC In power on the Motherboard and just wondering is this good for anything that supplies 12 V, it doesn't have to be a Motherboard power adaptor does it ? I specifically waited for this board assuming I could just get a 12 V Power adaptor and plug in and away I go.

Should I install the Usual Win XP or is there a trimmed down version I should run, thanks for any help offered.

cheers
Michael
