Shouldn't that read "completely"?

Not 'completely' because the MOBO page on www.viaembedded.com
offers download links to the out-of-date drivers.

but I can't run any background tasks if I watch a DVD as it
chops if I do. I can't even keep my wireless NIC open! Can
anyone back the benefit of linux over XP for performance? as this
is intolerable.

Watching DVD with xine without HW MPEG2 acceleration was nigh impossible with spamassassin cleaning incoming mail.

With HW acceleration in xine CPU is 10-15% so you can run background tasks without a problem. I just bought and watched LOTR extended and there was not a dropped frame during the three films. I had VDR recording a DVB-S TV show (Doctor Who). Spamassassin and Evolution running the whole time.

I will take any help I can get, I cannot get my cpu usage anywhere near what you guys are saying. It seems to hover between 80-100% and I get lots of stuttering during playback.

Epia M10000 (Nehemiah) with 1GB ram
I am running XP SP3 retail

My resolution is 640x480, so I really think this system should be able to handle it.

Which drivers are the correct ones?

here are the ones I installed:
Version 5.21A of the Hyperion Pro drivers: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_h...npro_v521a.zip

Version - 16.94.44.45_Rotation CLE266 Graphics Driver: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/CLE26...tion_logod.zip

Version - 7.00b VIA Vinyl Audio driver: http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/vinyl_v700b.zip

Also installed is:
DirectX 9.0c
Microsoft .NET framework 2.0
WINDVD5
Latest CombinedCommunityCodecPack CCCP: Combined Community Codec Pack

Please help me, when I goto advanced settings for windows media player it always shows software selected for the prefered decoder and the options box is greyed out so I cannot change it to hardware.

You know what, I just started an mp3 file in windows media player and I am still getting 60% cpu usage, there is no chance in hell it should be using 60%, does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

now if i disable the visualization in WMP then the cpu usage goes betwen 1-8% cpu usage.

Since you don't have an add in video card that has it's own GPU, your CPU is doing all the work. Not surprised you hit 80 to 100% CPU load. That is also why you cannot enable Hardware Acceleration, there isn't any.

If you look at Realkiwi's Signature, you see he's running Linux. Chris.

Get your M10000 drivers at
VIA EPIA M-Series Mini-ITX Board - VIA Technologies, Inc.

Be sure you are running the latest bios (v1.16) with the VGA driver on this page.

Back in 2004 & 2005 when I was building M10000 machines WinDVD did not seem to support hardware acceleration on the M10000. I used PowerDVD4 which did support it. You can expect 20-30% cpu usage with PowerDVD4 if you check "use hardware acceleration".
