Sorry to hear that. Would see if you can get a Modem that attaches to a LAN card (or slot) on your computer. Personal recommendation "do not use a USB modem"!!!
Other than that spend $20 or so dollars on an add on USB card w/ a NEC chipset. Check out AOL forums w/ people w same problems. Go to www.usbman.com to see if they have any answers.
Buy a compatable modem on e-bay. That's what I recommended (and did) for a coworker who was having all sorts of problems w/
her SBC Broadband connection. She's never been happier. Saved her from switching to Cable. She claims her computer is even faster. Who knows? High speed internet good, USB modem BAD!!! Good luck (BTW she runs Win98SE)

VIA built the chip which controls the USB2 on your motherboard. There are other companies that do the same. NEC is a company that makes USB2 chips that actually seem to work (at least in more cases than VIA). So buy an add on PCI USB2 card (do you have a free slot on the motherboard) with a NEC chipset on the card (not VIA) and install it. That MAY help.
or (BEST OPTION)
Try to talk AOL into sending you a replacement modem that is not USB. Don't forget the LAN (local area network) card for it unless your computer has LAN built on the motherboard. Port looks like a phone jack but bigger by a little. Ask AOL what they expect YOU to do about it. Ask them if they expect you to buy a new computer or replace the modem (or service). See what they say.
