VIA PCI USB 2.0 PCI card runs on Win XP as 1.1 - SOLUTION!
Just thought I'd share a solution I've discovered to a problem with a cheapo PCI USB card.
The card came unbranded with no drivers. It claimed to have 4 USB 2.0 ports. I plugged it in but when I tried the ports they said 'this device can run faster' (i.e. USB 1.1) etc.
On checking the VIA website it says USB 2 drivers are not available due to an agreement with Microsoft. But the point is they shouldn't be needed anyway, because USB 2 is plug-and-play with Win XP as the drivers are built in to XP.
What I've found is just that if Windows doesn't recognise the card properly, it installs the "VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller" driver. This is USB 1.1. You can check if you have got this by looking in Device Manager.
Fortunately if you have, it can be corrected. RIGHT-click on the "VIA Rev 5 Host controller" and select "Update Driver". Click NO to the 'Windows Update search?' screen. Then click "Install from a list or specific location". On the next screen click "Dont search, I will choose the driver". On the next screen you will see some drivers. UNTICK the "Show compatible hardware" box. You will then see more drivers. Select "VIA Enhanced Host Controller" (this is the USB 2 driver). You may be prompted to reboot, do so and hey presto, you should now have USB 2 working (well I did anyway).
Hope this helps anyone else who is stuck.
