God Please Help, Going Nuts !!!! It Shouldnt Be This Hard !!!!
Hello All,
This is driving me crazy and it just doesn't make sense.
I have 2 brand new identical usb / firewire external enclosures, (nextstar 3) with brand new identical hard drives, (seagate barracuda/ 300gb) . Here are my symptoms. I will address each enclosure as 1 and 2.
When booting both up #1 shows up in my computer, #2 doesn’t. both are connected via firewire cables and firewire card in my PC.
When I shut down and reverse the start up order, #2 first and then #1 second……. #1 doesn’t show up.
Basically only one drive is showing up and the one that is showing is always the 1st one that is booted up. When I connect USB, they both show up.
Here is what I have trouble shot.
Different cables, swapped master and slave on the jumpers on the hard drive, removed firewire card and replaced it back in AND just tired new FW card.
All of this is not making any sense.
God, please help. I could run USB but really.....why would I want to do that ??

How many firewire port are there in ur mobo? Did u try swapping to another port instead? Oso what OS u're running and does the firewire card require u to install driver or stuff?
Lastly it would be great if u could give us the make and model of ur mobo

Welcome to that great and mysterious world that is Firewire...
If they are identical, they most likely have the same identifier, and thus will only boot 'once'... This happened alot on the early FW/USB combo chips (like the crappy PL3507).. you might be able to flash upgrade the firmware.
If you have USB2.0, I would hook them up that way instead..

Thank you for your response. There are 2 ports on each and I have mixed and matched all of them. I am running XP pro and drivers needed for firewire card.
The model of the external drive is a Vantec NST-360UF-BK NexStar 3

Ah !!! I had read the possibility of this happening somewhere. I will check to see if there is an update on the chip. If not is there anyway to bypass it ??

Not that I know of... the 3507's use to ONLY set it to '000'. I dont know if they changed.

3507 is the Fire Wire IC chip's number. 000 is the Fire Wire address.
Do these drives have jumpers on them for Master and Slave or are they SATA drives? Chris.

hi there and thank you for the response.
yes, there are jumpers on them. I cant remember if I tested them while setting them differently.
Here is an update though. I used a different case, different manufacturer, via firewire.....booted up fine.
UGH !!!!!!!

hehe.. you prolly are going to have to do some reasearch to fine a manufacturer/chipset that will run 2 at a time, or use 2 different cases..
I would still go the USB2.0 route
Vantecusa.com is the website.. in the FAQ section, they have what chipsets are in what models.. I suggest you look it up. I did NOT see any firmware..
