Default USB2 windows thinks I am plugged into USB1.1

Hello

I have a problem with a GMU2P-04V USB2 card. I have a K7VAT, VIA KT-133 CHIPSET and ATX Form Factor Main Board. I have the latest BIOS and run XP Pro sp2 which has all the latest updates. There are 4 ports on the card and 2 USB1 ports on the back of the original case. I have tried searching for new driver updates and have installed the 2.1 March 2008 edition which was the latest I could find.

The problem I have Is no matter what Port I use for connecting a USB2 device Windows throws up a pop up saying this device will run faster if you connect it to the USB2 port, and shows 4 empty ports, when in fact they are all occupied. I have the original installation cd with the drivers but XP installs its own drivers before you have a chance to, also the instructions say it the card supports XP but the driver folder on the CD only mentions ME and 2000 editions!
Also in device manager it shows I have an advanced host USB and relevant usb roots installed OK.

I would be most grateful if you could throw some light on this subject as I have been trying to resolve the issue for a number of years now.

Kind regards Mr B. Hutchinson

If i'm not wrong ur K7VAT mobo is a Lucky star brand?? This mobo is infact quite old imo, as a matter of fact it only has 2 x onboard usb.

Does the GMU2P-04V USB2 card that u're trying to install comes with any driver cd? Oso is there a option for enabling usb 2 in bios?

Say if there isn't a option for enabling usb 2 and the mobo only has usb 1 option in bios. Most likely it wouldn't work, unless there's a bios update to correct the issue.

Hello Cas
Thank you for your help. I am not sure if it is a lucky star mobo. No where in my paper work does it mention the fact . It says version 2.1 and made in taiwan inside. The manual says it has 4 usb hubs but only two are available outside the case, one is named USB 1 and other USB 2 although I dont think it means USB2. It says ther are two internal USB2 sockets on the motherboard but I can only see some sort of 8 square connector blocks!! The Bios does not mention USB2 and I have just updated the BIOS recently. There is a cd for the card but xp loads the drivers and will not update from the CD saying its drivers are better.
I think as you have said the mother board will not work with USB2. Do you know of any way around this situation.

Regards Barry

[quote=cas;233685]By right it should work say with the usb2 card that plug into a pci slot. Tell u what, insert the CD that comes with the usb2 card and when it prompt u to install driver, choose to install from a list or sepcific location rather than install the driver automatically

Ignore if it mention xp driver are better or it loads it, just cancel and try installing the driver from the cd

USB drivers are built into XP, thats why the CD only has ME and Win2k drivers...

I subscribe to drivers update and I have the latest driver March 2008 from VIA, I have tired to install at command prompt from specific place it makes no difference XP still says it can not find a better driver.
Also My main board is a VT8363 version 2.1 chipset VIA 82C305 rev 3
Super Io: VIA686 rev34 At pci 7.
Also with XP you dont get a chance to install your own drivers. As soon as you install the pci card then boot xp installs the hardware and software before you have a chance. You can of course go into device manager and try and reinstall the drivers from a specific place which I have done before I have connected the PCI and after I connected bot it still will not work.
There are 8 connector blocks on the mother board for USB2 but I would have to buy external USB2 sockets and wirs ect and if I make a mistake with any wireing and I dont have any drawings I could trash the motherboard.
