Folding@Home NVIDIA GPU Client Confirmed
Quote:
After first getting information on NVIDIA's acquisition of RaySpace earlier today, we have some more fantastic news for NVIDIA GPU users and fans of the Folding@Home project.
Yes, it's finally coming - the NVIDIA GPU client we have all wanted since first seeing and tasting the power of the ATI GPU Folding@Home client.
Vijay Pande, the man behind the Folding@Home project, was on hand to demonstrate the first showing of the NVIDIA GPU client.
Apparently we aren't allowed to talk about specifics on performance of the client, mostly because the numbers we saw were based on an "upcoming NVIDIA GPU". I don't think I'll be spoiling anything by saying the new GPU was incredibly fast and the upcoming GPU will be faster than any Folding client today including the PS3; you will be impressed.
Regardless, the fact that NVIDIA is finally joining the Folding@Home community is great news - especially for our own PC Perspective Folding Frogs team! Vijay also discussed the creation of the OpenMM, a platform API that will be used to allow other molecular calculations be easily distributed to various computers and will have integrated support for both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs as well as modern CPUs.

Oh damn... I haven't turned on Folding on my PS3 in ages... Keep forgetting.
You know what annoys me about Folding though? When your PS3 or PC is working on a workgroup with a deadline, and that deadline's past, you still finish the core. It sends it in to Stanford, but you don't see it appear in Completed Workgroups, cause it's outdated... Why would it take all that time needed to complete it, when it's overdue anyway?

Is this that thing where you let someone else access the processing power of your PC or PS3 when they are idle?
Personally, I don't like the idea of that, I'm kinda paranoid about the security of my PC and PS3, really I feel that my PS3 shouldn't be connected to the network at all, except I'm waiting for an important Demo to be placed on the Europe PSN.

Now that's good news. I can put that baby to work on my KN9 SLI rig, along with the SMP client that runs on the dual core CPU. I don't think it will run well on my other nVidia cards tho.
@ Taris, yeah, the thing about the deadlines does kinda suk. But, in the past, I have turned in a WU that was late and did get credit for it. If you are running SMP and have a lot of missed deadlines, go back to the 5.03 client. Or in the setup options for the client you are running, just choose to accept work units without deadlines.
@ Bannik, I don't have a PS3 but I'm not sure why it's a big deal to leave it connected to the Net all the time. After all, our PC's are?
All my PC's run Folding, 4 are dedicated to Folding only. It's my way of contributing something that I feel is meaningful towards Cancer research. If it saves one life someday, it's all worth it. Chris.

@Bannik: Your PS3 only uses Folding when YOU activate it. It's under network, and I think it's pretty safe, or Sony wouldn't install it.
@Chris: I don't think you can roll back on PS3s. No matter though.

I know I have to turn it on, I'm not that stupid.
I'll never turn it on, nor will I ever let any of my equipment be used in such a manner.

Oh ok, sorry . Didn't mean anything by it.
Well, it's of course your choice. So if you don't feel safe doing it, by all means don't .

Wow, pretty rash statement from someone who obviously doesn't understand what Folding @ Home is all about. Hope no one you know never gets cancer that this research could cure. You make it sound like someone's asking you to do something illegal. In fact, no one asked you to do anything, you posted onto this Thread by your self.
No biggie, there are already over 500,000 PC's at work Folding for Stanford University. It's always been a person's choice to run Folding or not. We'll get by with out you. Chris.
