Is there a way i can backup a 2.5 hd onto a desktop?
Someone pass me a 2.5 inch hd to help him to backup his data, is there a way tat i can do it without incurring unnecssary cost say like getting a external usb 2.5 inch enclosure. Though i have a 3.5 inch usb external enclosure which is mean for normal hd.
I have a laptop with me but then again i would need to get addtional hardware even if i use my laptop to try transferring the data?

If you have an open IDE channel on your desktop, just use an adaptor to go from the 2.5" drive to ATA. Then just plug it in and do what you need. Chris.

If you get the SATA/ IDE external case you will still need the adaptor if you want to be able to access smaller laptop drives! Chris.

Tks pal but before u guys reply, i've went to bought the lappie to ide converter today and right now i'm recovering the data for the guy (shouldn't have say backup since the files somehow corrupted and he couldn't access all the data though he can see the hd)
He's using a samsung 2.5 hd, initally when i plug it into the converter, it says something like media error xxx
I notice it has the option of setting as master, slave or cable select but due to the fellow didn't pass me the jumper so no matter what i did i just couldn't to get the hd to be detected not to mention recovery the data.
Out of desperation.....guess what i did??? LOL... i used the jumper of a ide hd and though it fix but somehow is a bit too big due to it's height and somehow the converter couldn't totally slot in due to the jumper blocking cos of it's size, no choice i used a cutter to cut the jumper into half and used it on the converter and this time it works.....yeeehaaaaww ..... gosh, lucky it didn't exploded.
Could be due to using my P3 pc and the backup of data was transfer to a external usb 3.5 case which is why it seems abit slow. Lastly tks for the help guys, u guys are great and i know i can always depend on ur knowledge and expertise

Here is my vote:

I always buy several external enclosures when I find a good deal. To fill them, I buy factory-refurbished drives in 5 or 10 packs from a couple reputable sources. They make great gifts (for others and to myself as well). I've given away several as gifts and sold at least as many. When I work on someone's computer, I will say "Have you considered one of these?" and they almost always want one.
If the job included upgrading a notebook hard drive and their old drive is still good, if they want, I will put their old drive in an enclosure and charge them $25.00 for it (the enclosures only cost me about $8.00/ea). The four unboxed enclosures in the first pic already have drives in them; 20, 30, 40, and 80 gig.
I also have a couple of those 3.5" IDE to 2.5" IDE adapters.

They make converters for drives that also have a USB connector on the end, so you can just plug it in there. We have one here at work.
The have ones with 2.5", 3.5" and SATA connectors. I will see if I can find a link to one.
