Default 8800GT and Asus K8V-VM Ultra

Hello,

Iīm a new user at this site.
I have a big problem with my motherboard and my VGA 8800GT.

My motherboard (ASUS K8V-VM ULTRA) has a support for PCI EXPRESS 16X 1.0 and I bought a VGA 8800GT 512MB from XFX, with PCI EXPRESS 16X 2.0.

I installed the windows XP again, and I went to bios setup and changed from on board graphics to off board. But the system donīt recognize the off board VGA.

I read some infos at the internet that says that NVIDIA has a problem with VIA chipsets. They ask for users to contact ASUS/VIA to have an updated bios that supports this VGA.

Iīd like to know if its true, and if ASUS/VIA has and updated version for bios.

Do you know what I need to do? I donīt have money to by a new processor and motherboard yet.

My computer:
Atlhon 64 2800+
Motherboard Asus K8V-VM Ultra
HD 320 GB Samsung
Dr Hank 500 Watts with PCI-E plug
1,5 GB memory DDR 400MHZ

Nope, it is the video card that needs a compatible VGA BIOS, not the motherboard. However, the motherboard can also require BIOS tuning for stability with newer graphics cards. Since ASUS has not released a BIOS in over one year for this board, that is not likely to happen.

My advice would be, its time for a new motherboard. Sorry.

Do you have the 6 pin power connector from the power supply plugged into the video card? Do you have another video card to see if it's a problem with the mother board, it could be a bad card that you got from XFX. Or can you test that new card in another machine or have a shop nearby test it for you? Chris.

I bought a new power supply just to use this card. I plugued the PCI-E pin from the power suply into the card...
When I turn on the computer, the cooler from the card starts too.

I had a previous model 8600GT and I didnīt have any problem. Iīll test the card into another computer this weekend.

Do you think that ASUS will update the BIOS to run this card?

As I said, its not the motherboard BIOS, the VGA BIOS requires a compatibility fix.

ASUS will never release a BIOS for this. No motherboard manufacturer has, including for motherboards that are still active products (unlike the discontinued K8V-VM Ultra).

Ummm, not quite true, TCS. Abit did release a BIOS update that fixed a compatibility issue with it's AN-M2 boards and the 8800GT's. But this was more than likely not just related to PCI-E 2.0. Chris.

And has nothing to do with a VIA chipset. The NVIDIA chipset used on AN-M2 is third-generation PCI Express core logic and fully PCI-E 1.1 compliant.
