question about vid card memory
Here is a question that I just thought about. I was thinking of saving up some money and adding a vid card to my pc instead of the onboard. The question is, does the type of memory installed in the pc have any affect on what type of memory should be on the vid card?
Example, are there DDR2 800 video cards out there and should I buy one that has DDR2 800 memory on it, since thats what I have?
Or does it not have any affect on performance?
Edit: Oh also, of the NVidia cards how do they rate in performance from GeForce 8400 to GeForce 8800 series. I was lookin at the 8400 series. I dont game a huge amount of time.

I know that my GTX uses DDR2 or 3, which runs at 900MHZ. My ram is DDR2 800MHZ, one has nothing to do with the other so it makes no difference in what you have for ram and what the GPU ram runs at. I can get a card with DDR5 memory and still run my DDR2 800MHZ.

IMO I would get a 8800GT, which can be had for well under $150, a 8400, 8500 or so is just a waste of time. The 8800 series will blow away the 8400.

Steve,
If you know you won't be doing any gaming, just web surfing, then go with something like the 8400 series, on the other hand, if you will be playing some, then as mentioned, hit up an 8800gt

I will probably doing some gaming, so I will look at the 8800gt series.
I was just browsing the newegg site the other day and saw all the memory speeds listed and thought that since I have DDR2 800, then maybe the vid card should be. I had never thought of it before looking at the site.

Steve,
The vid memory speed won't matter at all in relation to the rest of your system, think of it as a seperate *system* in itself
What bottlenecks the card is a slow processor, and that's really the only situation that would merit concern.
The only way you would really notice a difference is if you were running a slow single core.
No worries

Also make a note of the power requirements of the new card and the 12 volt output of your power supply. The card I have now requires 28 amps from the 12 volt rail.

Steve~
If I were you, I'd get the EvGa 8800GT512 with DDR3 Memory
For $130 bucks ya can't go wrong, this card will run any game
not that your a big gamer, but GFX cards improve overall
System Performance Greatly. Consider that.
Also consider the Lifetime Warranty, Step-up Program and
the Superior GFX Precision tool from EvGa, it's so good that
ATI has Hired the guy whom wrote this TOOL it to do theirs.
Again, I know your not a big Gamer, but this card will ROCK
the house for a VERY low Price!! Increase your system
Performance as well.

What a nice Card!! Best Bang for the Buck today!!
Blue
JMHO
BTW~ Pass on the 8400 series...also I don't know much about your MoBo
but if you have a PCIe 16x Slot your in like Flin!!
Otherwise your specs are fine!! A 2.4GHz CPU is all you need.
Sure a 3GHZ would be better, but not requiered.
Your Chip (CPU) is just fine IMO:: Model Number Comparisons
Hell the Opteron 165 Dual Core is still a Rocking Fast OC'ing Beast
(socket 939)Stock 1.8GHZ OC's too 2.7 on AIR.
