Default Video playback issues (green or black screen) using Ubuntu 8.04

Hey everybody.

I´ve got my Hands onto a Via Epia-M based on the CLE266 Castlerock Chipset. I had some serious GFX errors wich are nearly all solved by now, but one things still drives me crazy: I cant play videos (VLC, Totem, MPlayer, whatever!). Everytime I try to play a video file all I get is a green or black picture (depending on the output i choose - xv is green, x11 is black). When I fast forward the video file I sometimes get a picture for a millisec, but its all green/black right after that. Help please!

I´m @work atm, so I cant output any logfiles, but I can supply some information without:

Driver used: via-unichrome.83.40692.tar.gz from linux.via.com.tw
DRI Status: working (according to glxinfo, glxgears gives me ~450 FPS)
Framebuffer seems to be broken, I get no text in pure Console Mode (dont know if this matters)
OS: Ubuntu 8.04, default Kernel

Has anybody got a good Idea why the Video Playback is disorted? I really need help on this one...

Thanks in advance,
pgr

I had the same problem until I found where to adjust brightness: go to Applications then sound&video then movie player then edit then preferences and move slider partway to right (all the way produces an all-white screen which is just as useless); you may need to adjust it again to get the right balance, which is best achieved by doing it while a movie is actually playing. I was afraid my codecs were screwed up until I found this solution.
