Default new drivers today on linux.via.com.tw

I tried them on my fujitsu siemens 3515 (vn896) on a fresh install of yesterday's Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) release.

Result = black screen on my LCD but Xorg.0.log says averything OK, including 3D, I think it's just my laptop screen that is not recognized, I will try some tweaks in xorg.conf and also try with an external screen and give you feedback in a few moments.

Its seems like alot of things have been added.

Checking the Ubuntu 8 version readme seems to say that glx is now supported and that compiz will work if you add "via" to the whitelist.

Anyone able to test this?

3. Note
In order to enable aiglx, please do as following:
(1) edit the script file /usr/bin/compiz, find the line:
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810"
(2) modify it to:
WHITELIST="nvidia intel ati radeon i810 via"
4. To enable desktop effects, restart x-server ("Ctl+Alt+Backspace) after "./vinstall" finished.

There is a xorg conf file in the tarball, don't know if you used this?

the xorg.conf in the tarball is for tweaking it has a lot of options, but the install script does create (or midify the existing??) xorg.conf. Tried the activedevice LCD option but still black screen.

Just plugged the external monitor, working at 1280x800 wich is my laptop screen resolution, the drivers behaves correctly, glxgears gives around 850 fps, but crashes on glxinfo or when trying to activate desktop effects... by the way, the sound card is working well, 'cause it's linked to the via driver too I think.... but still no way to have my laptop screen workin...

Have you tried this:

4 Default xorg.conf doesn't set display mode in order to let the driver to choose the best one according to the DDC reading of each individual monitor. However, for old monitors that do not have DDC, a Display subsection needs to be added to the xorg.conf file manually to set a mode else it won't display.

Also, looking at the release.txt files and version #s it seems that the Ubuntu version is more up to date and apparently supports desktop effects.

Anyone willing to try?

OK after restarting the computer (not only x server), the acceleration is working like a charm on my external screen and all the effects too

I think I understand that I have to configure the modes for my screen manually in xorg.conf, nut can u tell me how, or maybe give an example .

Thanx.

Sorry I wouldn't know, I'm totally cack when it comes to X. I suspect there are more linux specific forums where people will be able to help you v quickly.

I saw something about changing something from "LCD,CRT" to "CRT".

Tried that?
