I tend to prefer ATI because of the recent opensouce specs release by AMD.

I agree with the fact that if on a box is written "works with Linux" should work,if it doesnt sue them.

I would agree if there was a way to fit any other supported under linux graphics card in my lap - kind of hard. BTW I recommend Matrox cards for linux purposes. But I guess we`re going way out of topic.

I am sorry for not being able to post here or answer all the e-mails lately. Actually I lost track of the some of the e-mails regarding this issue (more than 100 e-mails a day).
Let me tell you what happened since my last post here.
It actually was a little hard setting up a call with VIA executives because we're in opposite parts of the world, very different time zones and they seem to be just as busy as I am, which is normal. A good part of this delay was my fault as I have traveled abroad twice in this last two weeks for business reasons. So there is no reason to blame VIA on this delay at all.
But, once that was resolved, the call happened and I can tell you that some VIA executives have actually read our petition and presented our concerns internally in meetings. There seems to be interest in the whole situation. I can tell you that some people from VIA top management are handling this issue.
I am now waiting for some feedback from VIA, which will happen within one month approximately. I have a very good feeling about the way things are happening and I will post news for you here as soon as I receive it. I cannot say much, but there definitely is no reason to be pessimistic at all: We have gathered their attention and they are open to talks.
So I ask you all to keep an eye on this thread in the next 30 days when I hopefully will be able to post some good news to all of us.
Regards,
Effenberg

Bookmark, it's best if you start a new Thread of your own since this Topic is about a Petition for better drivers from VIA. Just click the "New Thread" button and copy/ paste this post. Chris.

Unimpressed OEM
Fwiw. We have a new embedded project where VIA had made the final selection, but then we discovered this thread, which reinforced one of the black marks VIA earned during selection (lack of OEM technical documentation, even to the public level from AMD/Intel). So, we have now gone back to re-selection to revalidate the VIA choice..... So, while we aren't using Linux on this project, their treatment of Linux community might now be costing them a few thousand units/PA.

The only people VIA listen to are the unit manufacturers. Thanks to people like you, the message will finally get across faster.
When one of our supplier manufacturers asked VIA regarding their driver support they claimed that the lack of full support was because some monitors were out of specification. Yet the driver for XPe works well. Even the Linux VESA generic driver works albeit slow.
We are not asking for open source drivers (although they are better since it allows us to help fix bugs). We just want working drivers so that when a customer asks us for support on a VIA platform, the XServer does not crash!

Anxiously awaiting any news, and the hope of turning this paperweight into something worthwhile, maybe even eventually playing HD in MythTV...

no VIA here
I was just about to build an embedded linux system based on an EPIA board using a VIA chipset. Although the primary use is to be a NAS device I also need it to pull double duty as a low-end media center. (Un)fortunately I found this thread and have serious concerns that it will be able to play back video. It is a nice board (EPIA SN 10000EG C7), a shame that it uses VIA...
