Has anyone successfully built from the source code provided on the old download page and able run 720p content or better. I'm using open chrome from source, but it still can't do HD material smoothly. I have a cn700 and have been waiting patiently for some development. This talk of new Linux drivers is definitely good news and to actually see some results on the new page good too.

So far, the site would appear, at least to me, to be nothing more than a new interface to download pre-packaged binaries for possibly a new distribution or two.

Call me skeptical, but what's holding them back at this point? Where's the true cooperation with the open source community as opposed to just another limited distribution mechanism for a set of distributions that I inevitably don't currently have or want to install? Where's the documentation sharing that would seed the independent open source driver developers willing to do the work for them?

...
Still the proud owner of 2 Via-based paperweights... just waiting for drivers that will work with MythTV...

Well, I did notice that at first there were only 2 chipsets to choose from, now there are 4. So there is progress. If I worked there, I would have installed phpBB forums and a Bugzilla in one day, because that would bring what customers want in no-time. But for VIA, having pictures of cute asian girls on websites appears to be a must, and these are not distributed with phpBB and Bugzilla. This is probably an idea from marketing.

It would be nice if they'd realize that we check VIA's website to find drivers, forums and a bug tracking system. If we want cute girls, a hardware manufacturers website is about the last place to look.

I'd like to tell that to VIA, but their forum is still not on-line, so interaction between company and customer - the primary purpose of the whole open-source approach - is not possible. I guess they're too busy with the selection of pictures of girls to put on the web page.

Default VIA Gives 16,434 Lines Of OSS Code

I guess you've all seen this by now:
[Phoronix] VIA Gives 16,434 Lines Of OSS Code

This looks like the "finally" stuff we've been waiting for. For ages.

I wrote e-mail to VIA asking the same question, and here is what they write to me:
"Regarding the source code, VIA is reviewing the code such as the coding style, the remark and making it easy to read. However, it takes time. So VIA will release source code but not in the near future."

According to the article:

Quote:
Supported by this driver is VIA's Unichrome CLE266, K400, K800, PM800, CN700, CX700, K8M890, P4M890, P4M900, and VX800 IGPs.
Do you think the UniChrome VIA KM266Pro is too old or different from those to get support from this driver?

That is, if you were waiting for a framebuffer driver, which most of us weren't, I don't think. Xorg drivers with acceleration for MPEG-2 and H.264 using industry-standard approaches is what the majority of the issue is. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction, though.

How uncool is that eh? VIA does not allows me to be a Linux user. Nothing is supported and the performance is 4x worse than on XP.

VIA: I honestly did not know you would not support other OSs than XP when I bought this Laptop. Seriously, how could I?

The Laptop vendor says it's not their fault but yours: They also are waiting for some move from you in terms of drivers. If you are not gonna support your own video chipset on Linux, can you refund me so I can get a Laptop with a chipset that actually works on Linux??
Hm ive got same problem like you I try to play ET but it dont works.
Under Windows it works good, but it lags sometimes.
Also other 3D applications work nice without problems but I want to use Linux
Big Problem with Unichrome Pro IGP on kubuntu playing on Wolfesntein ET

Also glxinfo gives some strange shit:
ubuntuusers - No Paste Service

Exclamation I'm still dissappointed.

so, a new page for downloading drivers is up. I looked at it. it looks.. like if they took their half-employed linux-get-it-to-work-overworked-underpayed staff and forced him/her to set up a webpage instead of coding drivers.

Heck, that's just visuals, so I ignore them. What files is there to download? anything useful? Nope, not at all.

It's beautiful how they don't reply to mails I send them through their own links, it's so nice to see how they think they need to "clean up" their drivers before we can get to look at them.

Yay! Let's collaborate with the folks that love the sentance: "Release early, Release often". Lets see... *thinks*

Yes!, the first thing we should definately do is say, with a polite voice: "We're working on something we don't want you to see, go away and believe that we will eventually give you everything you want."

But sure, this wasn't supposed to be about freedom or free software or their collaboration with the community, since the petition just wanted to ensure there comes a driver along that works. That surely allows them to work in the dark and release beta drivers that not work stating that "we're working on it, have some patience".

So, what was the first thing _I_ did when I heard about this? I went over to #unichrome and the mailinglists for openchrome, those guys should got a feel for the situation.

Guess the response?
something along the lines that VIA never contacted them about it, it's just a press release and nothing really happened. sure, it _could_ happen, but there's no reason to get your hopes up, they did it before they can do it again.

Meh, I hate this. I've spent about $600-900 on via boards because they were supported in linux. because they were going to make things good and released a driver. I've been sitting with these 3 computers for years now and they still can't do such simple things as fade-in/fade-out in opengl without issues.

I've mailed via TWICE over the past years explaining the situation and asking them for suggestions on how to fix things, but they simply wasn't interested in talking, so they ditched it and didn't reply.

And oh, I just read in another forum thread here about how they link here and make it their support forum. That's just.. not good. They are a producer that sells products. They have a support section that you can get in touch with, but they rather send people here than to give them a phone number or email to the right place.

Oh well, this is just some angry ranting over the situation. I bet that some of this I've said is just straight out false and lies, so if you feel like knowing what, go find out.

I would love it if people actually talked with the OpenChrome folks and if people actually managed to get in touch with VIA to have an OPEN conversation where one could ask _any_ question they'd like and actually get a reply.

Great work on the petition btw, ~4500 when I signed mine, if you want a translation to swedish you can always mail me at roze@roze.mine.nu and we can work something out.
