Default SATA hard drive with 6421 PCI controller

I have a Maxtor 6H500F0 SATA drive and 2 seperate VIA PCI controller cards. When I start windows with the drive plugged in I get "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" So far I have tried: setting jumpers for 150mb/sec, different PCI slots, on two seperate (both 6421) VIA controller cards. The drive works fine in another system with a Si chip, and the controllers both work with a SATA DVD-ROM. I changed the Plug and Play setting in the BIOS. The drivers are VIA Raid controller 3249, 5.1.6000.574, 1/22/2008. Any other ideas on a reason it's not working. I would very much appreciate it.

Does anyone know wich drivers I should be using for a 6421 chip? What's the differance in 570a and the 3249 that windows prefers?

yesipuff- that could be the problem.

What is the make and model of your motherboard? along with the PCB version. What Windows version are you using, XP?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I should have mentioned that right away. It's an ASUS P4T533C mobo with 5x 32-bit PCI slots, PCI 2.2 compliant and I'm running XP MCE w/SP3. Here is some info from everest from 2 (separate) PCI SATA 6421 controllers currently installed. Could it be that "the devices (both cards) fail to start" with the drive because RAID drivers are installed and the cards are not RAID?

If it was mine I would update the motherboard to the latest bios and try again.

I have the latest available, but it's a beta. Do you think I should downgrade?

I have tried it with all other PCI cards removed, and tried it in each slot. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the hard drive or drivers, because I have a SATA DVD ROM that works fine with both cards, and the hard drive works with an SI chip in another system. If only I had another SATA hard drive to test the card with, then I can be sure it has something to do with the hard drive. I think maybe it's not in SATA 1 mode. I don't have the original jumper for the drive, and the pins are smaller than normal, so I'm using aluminum foil.
