Did one more check.

Removed the IDE Disc and put it in a USB box and connected the USB to my regular Windows 2000 machine. Ran the Seagate tool for windows and the test ran succesfully. As I had expected it to do.

I would also recheck the case connector to the front panel, ie, power switch, HDD, LED, etc.

** Looks OK in the BIOS as far as can see.** The harddrive should have written on it all the capacity settings so check in the bios to see if they are the same.

Have you tried clearing the bios, make sure the power cord is turned off first.

Found an old Fujitsu MPF3204AT. Plugged it in and started the machine. Worked without a hitch. No errors in the log. And when Ubuntu was up and running I could access the disc without any problems.

Have to backup anything of interest on that disc before I can format it but it looks like a good fallback plan if I can't get the Seagate up and running.

Did a recheck of the connectors and can't find anything strange about them.

The reported values in the BIOS screen was
Capacity: 120 GB
Cylinder: 57461
Head: 16
Precomp: 0
Landing zone: 57460
Sector: 255

The disc only contains model/serial information written on it. Found some information on Seagate site saying the following but not sure if this is relating to something different...

Cylinders: 16383
Heads: 16
Sector: 63

Tried it. Didn't make a difference either.

Have you tried Seagates software to write zeros over the harddrive just in case there is an old piece of software hindering things.

Did a check on one of my other PC that have the same type of disc different type of hardware but same type of BIOS ( Award ) and it reported the same as the Via board.

Cylinder: 57461
Head: 16
Landing zone: 57460
Sector: 255

Since I don't have a problem on that PC I guess that information is correct for this type of disc.

Next up is to boot on the Seagate tools ISO disc and try and access the disc as you suggested.
