AMD Budget System
So my friend has asked me to help him build a budget system that would be used for mediocre gaming, school work, and also last a long time. Not really a fan of generic parts, and unknown brands, I decided to stick to companies with a well known reputation as much as possible. I ended up with a $650 system. Of course all under newegg =]
Antec Three Hundred Black ATX case $59.95
Seagate 160GB SATA HD $44.99
EVGA 8800GT 512MB DDR3 $134.99
OCZ GamexStream 600w PSU $89.99
ASUS M3A78 Pro AM2+ Motherboard $94.99
AMD Phenom 9600 AM2+ Black Edition
&
G.SKILL 4gb(2x2GB) DDR2 800
Combo $206.98
in total...
631.89
with shipping to myself...$648.06
There was a 20 dollar rebate for the 8800gt, and a 30 dollar rebate for the OCZ PSU. So if you wish to count it, its $598.06,
which I think is a pretty good price. The system also has lots of room for updates. Also compatible with future AM3 processors, and video card an easy upgrade. So what do you think guys? Do you think I went too far with these parts?
ALSO I would like to thank you, @Chris, @tcsenter, and @T@2 for helping me clarify my AM2+ questions..

Looks good, that EVGA card should be up to playing any new game. OCZ great choice for RAM, too. Chris.

I've had one other person telling me I should go for the X2 6000+, rather than the quad core. It supposedly has better performance, can someone confirm this?

Yes, in all honesty, even an X2 5000+ Black Edition (which overclocks like crazy!) will out perform a Phenom. So a 6000+ or a 6400+ like I have in my main gaming rig will smoke a Phenom.
Most folks in their every day use can barely utilize a Dual Core CPU anyways. The reason that I have 4 Phenom quads is that I run Folding @ Home on them, and Folding uses all 4 cores. But as I say, my main gaming/ everyday use rig is my trusty old KN9 SLI with the X2 6400+ and my new EVGA GTX 260 SSC. Chris.
