Default Skype microphone muted

I am attempting to use Skype. The USB camera works well. I also have a non USB headset that plugs into the pink and green sockets at the back of my PC. For some reason the microphone does not work. Skype tells me that the microphone is muted. I have tried everything to unmute but no success. Even in "Sounds and Audio Devices" on the control panel does not give me the option to unmute the microphone.

Can someone please assist me?

Do you know what sound chip the motherboard is using or have you a sound card?

I have no idea of what is happening on the motherboard or of the soundcard that is in my computer. In the volume control panel I have increased the volume for the mic. Still no joy.

On the sounds and Audio devices properties there is a test hardware, ie, voice recording so run the wizard and see if it can pin point the problem.
