Its very possible that the video card is not compatible with the games, or the driver being used is not compatible with the games. If the video card was dead then you wouldnt see anything at all. When you say crashes, explain what happens, does just the game crash and your left with just the desktop, does it produce a blue screen and restart the computer??
There could be other factors here at work also, corrupted drivers, corrupted OS etc. You said you had the system then gave it to someone else. They could of changed, installed something that you are not picking up.Very hard for me to say without actually sitting down and looking the system over.
Look in device manager, are there any conflicts?? Look in event viewer, are there any errors being produced that relate to the problem??
The video card you are using is a very poor choice for games, like I said before it may be better to get a new card from ATI or Nvidia and see if the problem persists.
You may want to do a full system format and reinstall XP also, this will take care of any issues that are just near impossible to pick up.
