Default Surround Sound not working properly with certain programmes

Hi im not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but i really need help.
I recently purchased a new motherboard and CPU. Since then i cant get my surround sound to work properly. I have the creative sbs 5.1 560 system, and i got VIA HD audio deck through my motherboard, it is a ASUS M3N78. When i run the sound test with the Audio deck program i got, the sound comes out all of the speakers, but when i play music with Winamp or Windows media player, or even a game, it doesnt work properly. I have downloaded a lot of drivers and codecs, but none of them seem to get the problem fixed. I`m just wondering if its me downloading the wrong drivers or if something else is wrong.

Windows XP Pro SP2
Package version: 6.10b(i downloaded it recently)
Driver Version: 6.0.1.1510
Codec Type: VT1708b

Games have to be coded for surround sound or you will only get 2.1 channels. And if the game does support 5.1, there is usually an option you have to enable in the game's sound options. Not sure about Winamp or Media player, I don't use either, but I know iTunes doesn't have 5.1; neither does Power DVD unless you purchase the audio upgrade.

And I have Realtek onboard sound, so it's not just a VIA thing. You can try using Magic 5.1 (I think that's what it's called) see what that does. Basically, the program you are using must support 5.1 or all the codecs in the world won't give it to you. Chris.
