Man, I'm almost ready to cry tears of joyness after finally finding out why my Radeon 9600 was refusing to let me play Starcraft/broodWar, of all games! I'm just about ready to download a new catalyst driver, any of them that is higher than 8.2 apparently, but I need to know 1 last piece of information. They all seem to refer to Windows XP and/or Windows Vista. I am currently using Windows 2000.

Will these new catalyst drivers work on Windows 2000 even though they say XP/Vista, or do I have to buy a new video card because no one supports W2K anymore?

I'm just going to sit here and wait for a response, as long as it takes, because I have nothing better to do and want to play Starcraft right now! Cmon guys, throw me a bone! :P

From what I can see the answer is no, Windows 2000 is no longer supported. The last driver was version 6.2 from February 2006. A new video card will not help your matter, you need to at least move up to Windows XP.

Bah. I reformatted to Win XP and installed all the newest drivers for everything and still cannot play Starcraft, lol. Weird. I played World of Warcraft for 3 and a half years and never ever had these issues.

I'm running Athlon XP 3200+ (socket A) with an ATI 9600 256MB card, 2GB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, Gigabyte mobo GA-7N400 with the Nvidia Ultra 400 chipset on Win XP professional. I shouldn't be having these crummy issues. Maybe it's time to think about going for a new Intel system that's about 6 months old. I don't get it. I can run the newer games that are graphic intensive that my card can handle but I can't run a game that could be played on a pentium 90 with 2MB RAM and an 8MB video card. WTF?

Its more the game then your system, Starcraft is designed to run on Win95-98-NT. I didnt relize the age of Starcraft when I first posted. Under XP, you could try to run the game in compalibility mode. Right click the Starcraft .EXE and select Win98 and see if that helps.

Whoa, you know what? Boy that's embarassing. I actually knew about that and completely forgot about it, lol. I just bet it will work better, or at least like it should. Good thinking! That's why you make the big bucks. Thanks a bunch!

Well, compatibility mode didn't work either, for win95-w2k. I guess the game's just too old to work properly on XP. Oh well, woulda been nice but I'm not going to give myself an ulcer over it.
