| Ubuntu 7.04 to Reach its EOL on October 19, 2008 Monday, September 29, 2008
If you are still using Ubuntu 7.04, it’s time to think about upgrading your system to Ubuntu 7.10. It has been reported at linuxcompatible.org that Ubuntu 7.04 will reach its end of life on October 19th, 2008. After that date users of this version won’t be able to receive any security notices, information, and other updates. “The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 7.04 is via Ubuntu 7.10. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades. Note that upgrades to version 8.04 LTS and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via an upgrade first to 7.10, then to 8.04 LTS. Both Ubuntu 7.10 and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS continue to be actively supported with security updates and select high-impact bug fixes. All announcements of official security updates for Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing list, information about which may be found at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce. “
| Apple Selling Unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong Monday, September 29, 2008
It is interesting to hear that Apple is now started selling unlocked versions of the all new iPhone 3G in Hong Kong (but not so far in any other markets). Unlocked versions of the device give you the liberty to pick any operator (carrier) you want to without any limitations – but unfortunately liberty doesn’t come cheap. According to the Apple Store, the 8GB version is priced at HK$5,400 (around US$ 695.00) and 16GB one is priced at HK$ 6,200 (around US$ 798.00). “iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.” – Apple Store.

| BYOC, Citrix's New Program for Its Employees Friday, September 26, 2008
Do you ever wish you could choose the notebook you use at work rather than having to make do with the model selected for you by the IT department? Well, employees of US software firm Citrix Systems Inc now have the freedom to do this under the company's new BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) plan, which gives them a $2,100 stipend to buy the laptop of their choice (a three year warrantee and anti-virus software must also be included). The plan allows employees to use the laptops they purchase for both business and personal purposes, and the systems are equipped with the company's own virtualization software that enables staff to safely access the software and data they need when they are working away from the office. In addition to improving employee morale, the BYOC plan also actually helps Citrix to save money through reduced notebook maintenance and management costs. Now that's what I call a win-win solution for both the company and its employees!- Yahoo News
| | Oracle to Sell Computer Hardware for First Time Thursday, September 25, 2008
Yahoo News has reported that Oracle Corp., in history of 31 years, is selling computer hardware for the first time. Wow! It seems like Oracle is trying to expand their business beyond database management software. According to the article on Yahoo News, “Ellison unveiled the products — in development for three years — at an Oracle customer conference attended by nearly 43,000 people. The database machine will sell for $650,000 and store up to 168 terabytes — ‘1,400 times larger than Apple's largest iPod,’ Ellison boasted in reference to the 120-gigabyte media device made by the company run by his best friend, Steve Jobs.” - Yahoo News

| By Binod on11/19/2008 7:49 AM | |
| Hi readers, this is my first blog post on Google Android, a new open source smartphone operating system designed by Google. Till now operating systems for mobiles have been dominated by Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and OS X iPhone. To compete with these mobile OS platforms, Google released their much anticipated Android operating system. When Apple’s iPhone 3G was released it caused a storm in the smartphone segment leading other manufacturers to design smartphones as well, like the Sony experia x1, Samsung Omnia, HTC Touch diamond etc ... (Jai published a comparison of the HTC Touch and the iPhone here). In this tough competitive market it’s not an easy task for smartp ... | | | Comments (0) | More... |

WoW! Need I say more? As most of you may know, World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King was launched late last week, the 13th in the US and the 14th here in Australia (about 10 hours after the US). I must say that I was quite surprised at the turn out at my local games shop. I had no doubt that there would be a lot of people wanting to play the game on a worldwide basis but I was seriously surprised to see more than 300 people at my little local store. Now I’m not anywhere near a city centre, in fact I’m more than an hour away. God only knows what it would have been like in the city! I’ve heard stories of friends in the US who drove around to several stores looking for the opportunity to get the game without having to wait two hours in line. And this is at midnight! | | | Comments (0) | More... |
| | dTunes only for Unlocked iPhones | | From My iPhone
| By Jaishankar on11/14/2008 9:42 AM | |
|
Have you heard about the dTunes? That’s not a typo, I’m talking about dTunes not iTunes. Even I got confused. I was amazed when I saw the application on one my friend’s iPhones. It is similar to iTunes but the only difference is in the name. So I immediately grabbed the phone and explored the application. The application seems interesting but the only catch is you must have an unlocked iPhone in order to download dTunes. Did you know, Apple has not approved this application because it duplicates a current iPhone feature? So, use it at your own risk! (An unclocked iPhone is an iPhone that has been cracked in order to support cell phone carriers other than the one that the phone ... | | | Comments (0) | More... |
