The winner of the VIA EPIA 5th Birthday EPIA mod competition has been announced
Wednesday, February 28, 2007

The first place winner who received almost triple the number of second preference votes than any other entry which sealed the deal, is Jeffrey Stephenson and his Humidor CL Server. I couldn't be happier for Jeffrey. The Humidor CL Server is only one of many classy mods that he has done over the years. He is one of the most well known EPIA modders. I had the pleasure of meeting him at QuakeCon a few years ago. He pays great attention to the craftsmanship and detail of his creations and he also has a sincere appreciation for the unique characteristics of EPIA boards and what they have allowed him to create over the years. Read on to find out the second, third and fourth places winners.

Thanks go to our sponsors of this competition, Mini-Box.com and Logic Supply.

VIA Expands Cooperation with Geekcorps to Empower Remote Mali Communities
Tuesday, February 27, 2007

In June last year I met with the Director of Geekcorps who told me about a project in Mali that would potentially provide communication, banking, printing, copying and sales services at markets. It was an ingenious plan and I'm very happy to have received a Press Release from VIA that confirms that it is now taking fruition:

"Mali, the 4th poorest country in the world with an average annual income of just US$1,200, is home to nearly 12 million people, most in rural communities with 64% below the poverty line and 60% illiterate. Much of the country is desert, so temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius and dust pollution are common. The extreme poverty, scarcity of natural resources and poor communication between villages makes the region susceptible to conflict, so Geekcorps, in partnership with USAID, is approaching these problems with innovative technology solutions.

“Cybertigi” is a mobile computing kiosk program aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs to create their own micro-businesses selling cyber services such as email, voicemail, printing, photography and web-based information. A “tigi” is a local tradesman in Bambara, the local language; thus the Cybertigi offers services during market days in local towns and villages. While the first Cybertigis are using fixed locations, the goal is for mobility, with all equipment in a cart to enable travel between markets, enabling the vendor to expand the customer base and for far more to benefit from these services.

Cybertigi mobile kiosks comprise a low power, ruggedized VIA pc-1 PHD (Power, Heat and Dust) appliance linked to a Nokia 770 mobile phone, plus an LCD monitor, printer, scanner and digital camera, all of which run off car batteries – essential in low- or no-power areas. Voicemail is proving very popular for the largely illiterate population, as is photography and e-governance services such as land registration. Services are usually asynchronous, with package up- and downloads batch-processed when the vendor can access an Internet connection, and with reply mail and information delivered on the following market day."

Double sided keyboard for UMPCs
Tuesday, February 27, 2007

"The same guys that brought us the UMPC pouch/keyboard are now bringing us a double-sided keyboard that includes your standard QWERTY keys on one side and a full deck of media controls on the other. The cloth has sensors built in so that when you're typing on one side, it doesn't activate the buttons on the other. I got a quick demo of this at 3GSM and although it worked flawlessly and the concept is cool, I'd think having to flip back and forth after awhile would get, well, tedious." Source: Gizmodo.com.

UMPC Pro - do they exist?
Tuesday, February 27, 2007

When the OQO model 02 was launched at CES by Bill Gates in January he called it a UMPC Pro - or so the news reports said. It is a term I have not heard since. Pocketables.net seem a little upset about it: "Other manufacturers with similarly spec'd handtops seem to have no interest in being included in the "new" category. And Microsoft itself neither acknowledges nor uses the term. That comes straight from the horse's mouth, too, as I recently contacted Microsoft's UMPC Team about this." So Microsoft doesn't have plans for a new UMPC Pro device category? VIA prefers the term Ultra Mobile Device or UMD. UMPC still seems to be the most popular term used by manufacturers and media.

Who Changed My Inbox?
Fiona's Ramblings By fiona on11/20/2008 11:18 PM

I logged in to gmail this morning to find a thick blue border around the sections and the spacing was a little different to what it was yesterday. At first I thought one of my cats had sat on the keyboard again and changed some settings in Firefox, until I noticed a message at the top from Google about new colors and themes. Google have added a Themes tab to gmail settings, a mass roll-out on all gmail accounts. So that you notice the new feature your inbox will now be blue-themed, although you can go back to the classic look if you can’t handle change.

All in all there are 26 themes to choose from. Most of them are color shades but there’s also a few cutie ones that would appeal to kids and teenagers and anyon ...

Getting Started with Google Android
All about Google Android! By Binod on11/19/2008 7:49 AM

Hi readers, this is my first blog post on Google Android, a new open source smartphone operating system designed by Google. Till now operating systems for mobiles have been dominated by Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and OS X iPhone. To compete with these mobile OS platforms, Google released their much anticipated Android operating system.

When Apple’s iPhone 3G was released it caused a storm in the smartphone segment leading other manufacturers to design smartphones as well, like the Sony experia x1, Samsung Omnia, HTC Touch diamond etc ... (Jai published a comparison of the HTC Touch and the iPhone here).

In this tough competitive market it’s not an easy task for smartp ...
