| Technology Gets Wyse Wednesday, September 12, 2007 Everybody’s going green these days. It’s only natural for the top players to jump on the bandwagon to stay ahead of the game. Wyse Technology has just announced its zero client computing initiatives for a richer, simpler experience. The device does not carry an operating system, applications or configuration settings. Impossible? Is anything impossible anymore? In this case, the information is stored on a secure server and recalled via a secure network when the device is powered on. The reduction in circuitry has in turn reduced the costs and its energy consumption is about 90% less than a regular PC. Wyse X90 and X90e thin notebooks are a part of this new launch. The first mobile thin clients to support multimedia video playback, these are powered by VIA C7-M ULV 1.2GHz processors. See for yourself at EarthTimes.org. | |
| Virtual Museum for the Weird and the Wonderful Wednesday, September 12, 2007 Although we’ve only been in the 21st century for less than a decade, perhaps it’s not too soon to look back and consider some of the weird and wonderful things of ages gone by. In an age where your cars now tell you where to go, how strange would it be to have a PC that looks like a pen display or a 1930s-style toaster? Or how about a motherboard wrapped up in a humidor? Several of these “new” creations are powered by mini-ITX boards. You can see them all in the virtual museum here. | |

| Pico-ITX cases Tuesday, September 11, 2007 Pico-ITX boards are now available, but what would you put one in? "So far no company has officially released a Pico-ITX enclosure. We have heard rumors, seen mock-ups, and even seen a picture or two, but you can’t buy one yet. Aside from VIA’s reference design, which we saw at CES and is not available, the only company that has said anything officially is Serener. Their GS-L08 should be the first Pico-ITX case to hit the market." Geek.com goes on to reveal some details about a Silverstone design, the PT10, which looks reminiscent of a simple mac mini. | |

| Editorial: Forum conduct Monday, September 10, 2007 Have you ever got carried away in a forum? It's easy to forget that your fellow forum members are real people, or to take on an alter ego that you wouldn't show in real life. Chris Taylor explores the pitfalls of forum banter providing several real-life examples of when forum conduct hate bitten the hand that typed it!"I’ve been using forums—the one in this story regularly and a half dozen or so others off and on—for many a year now. This story, is not unique—I’ve seen similar things happen before. Another guy on this forum, this stupid kid, he had a habit of bragging about the speeds he’d managed to achieve on his motorcycle. He’d come on and tell us how he’d just been on the highway and floored it and gone more than double the legal limit and how, yeah, that was really cool. When he was picked up by the police a couple of weeks later and the story became fodder for the tabloids and current affair shows, his posts were shown on national television." | Hardware news Monday, September 10, 2007 VisionTek has made a name for themselves with their unique offerings and now they’ve done it again. This time it’s a video card that makes use of the classic PCI bus—the X1300. If you’re at a loss for why on earth you’d want a video card that runs from a PCI slot, think about its application in something like a compact Home Theater PC. VisionTek wrote in a statement, “Not all computers even nowadays feature PCI Express or AGP slots for graphics cards, however, virtually all PCs feature PCI slots.” Find out all you want to know about the video card here. While on the subject of video cards, the Sapphire HD 2600 XT Ultimate Edition deserves a mention. Although the performance just misses being on par with its predecessor (Sapphire HD 2600 XT), it does offer completely silence so you can concentrate on your game and better resolution than the older version. Since it’s off by a few frames per second, a hardcore gamer may prefer to stick with the original HD 2600 XT. Read the review here. If, on the other hand, what you need is a high-performance card for all those gaming marathons, take a look at the WinFast PX8600 GTS TDH Extreme. The GDDR3 memory comes clocked at 1000(2000) MHz and the GPU is set to 710 MHz. It comes recommended as a good overclocker. Catch the detailed review with pros and cons here. | |
