In a world where small and smaller are the IT keywords of the day, one aspect of technology just got bigger. And boy, are we glad. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 Hard Drive is one of the largest capacity desktop drives in the market. Supporting a full terabyte of data, this drive has the multimedia moguls and gamers jumping in the aisles. Get the dirt on its performance here.

Amidst the buzz on cases, there are always the silent ones who get a bunch of attention. Who wouldn't like to spend the day on their PC without annoying the rest of the household with that persistent buzz? The Caterpillar is a new case from Nexus, sporting two quiet fans and panels covered in "sound-absorbing material." So can silence and great ventilation be achieved in the same unit? Find out here.

Sparkle has added their Action 700 Power Supply to the other power units out there. Will it stand up to the competition? That remains to be seen. 3dGameMan.com got out their magnifying glass to inspect the unit for quality and comparability. "Sparkle's history as a quality OEM manufacturer has really helped them put out an excellent first gamer power supply. Virtual Hideout has been busy since their last review of the Tt LANBOX earlier this year. Now they've got their hands on the Tt LANBOX Lite, a fully modular system with removeable components to ease installation. "There are front panel mesh and side panel openings for increased airflow, and front and rear fans help with the air flow to keep all the components cool. Also, let's not forget to mention that Piano finish that I love so much." Find out what makes the Lite version special here.

For a gamer on a budget, the Cooler Master CM 690 is a breath of fresh air. Selling online at $70 or less, it comes packed with some great features. "There's no doubt that Cooler Master has released a perfect case for cooling. In total, eight fans can be installed (one in front, one in back, one at the bottom, two at the top, two on the left side, and one on the right). If fans aren't your thing, you can swap them out for a water cooling setup, since holes are already provided. A wire routing system should help cables stay out of the way, and air to flow easily in the case." You know you want to read this one. Check it out here.

Breaking the Code: iPhone
Thursday, September 13, 2007

Teenaged George Hotz earned his ten minutes of fame when he ripped into his $600 iphone and went to work with a soldering iron. Now we have a new collaboration of hackers who made it their business to break the mysteries (and the restrictions) of the iPhone software. Want to use your iPhone on a network other than AT&T? Now you can! The group has made free software and easy instructions available to all who need them.

In late 2006, Jennifer Granick, a cyber-law attorney, won an exemption making it legal to break locks to enable phones to use a different wireless network.

But how is all this going to affect AT&T? Find out here.

Settling For Less?

Rob Beschizza's blog on wired.com takes an interesting look at UMPCs. According to traffic stats on UMPCportal.com, the five most popular handhelds are mini-me versions of laptops. High on the list is the HTC Shift, closely followed by the Asus Eee. Beschizza compares these with the official UMPC spec and finds them wanting. The VIA Nanobook from Packard Bell rounds off the list of top five.

In the end, the choice comes down to which of the main characteristics of a UMPC are you willing to do without: "pocket-small, high-performance, long-life battery."

All right, so we've heard the rave reviews of the super hot OQO 02 model upgrade with the VIA C-7M processor. But let's put our money where our mouth is for a minute. How affordable is this new toy? PC World offers a brief glimpse of the options and the related costs. A basic 1.6GHz version starts out at $1,849. Go one step further and swap Windows Vista for Windows XP and you'll save yourself $600. The optional add-ons like the EVDO mobile data card would bump up the price to $2,199. See for yourself.

How to measure your power usage
Wednesday, September 12, 2007

Last month, John and I had a hard time trying to find a way to measure the power consumption of the VIA pc3500 motherboard. The board is designed with ultra-low power consumption in mind and we wanted to see just how well it compared to a mid-range PC. We ended up using a commercial product that is readily available in the US called a Killowatt meter, which you plug in between the device you want to test and the powerpoint. TheGreenLounge.org have produced an article and a video that explain how you can measure the power draw of devices with nothing more than a bit of math and a stop-watch. It may not be 100% accurate, but it would give you a ballpark idea on the cost of a device.

If that’s you, take a look at how it's put together.
