Green Mini-ITX board
Friday, May 04, 2007

EPIACenter.com have noticed another change to the VPSD website. A new VB7001 model has been added to the list. It's very similar to the EPIA EN series board, except that it features the carbon free C7-D processor. "So while this is without a doubt the "greenest" Mini-ITX platform to date I'm wondering whether many enthusiasts will find this an interesting product. Well, here's a good reason why: the price. According to Japanese website ko-soku.co.jp the VB7001 / 1.5GHz C7-D combo will only cost 14,800 Yen (~€90 / ~$125). That's significantly cheaper than any comparable Mini-ITX solution that I can currently think of. The price difference really becomes obvious when you compare it to the EPIA EN15000G motherboard which offers very similar features but costs around €170/ $225."

One for the networking geeks

Those of you who work in the room out the back or down in the basement of large buildings at a server farm will appreciate this the most: "Most IT administrators are familiar with Windows 2000 and 2003 server. Server 2003 is relatively new and was a leap in technology over 2000 server offering significant advances in terminal services and Active Directory support over its older Windows 2000 brother. Window Server code name "Longhorn" offers a similar advancement in technology over Server 2003. As the successor to Windows Server 2003 the new Windows Server "Longhorn" will be known as Server 2007/2008 depending upon its actual release date. We installed "Longhorn" on two servers and bring you observations and a first look at the newly released Beta 3 as well as our comments on its overall functionality and viability as a replacement server OS for 2003." Read on at Techwarelabs.com.

Don't forget your mum
Thursday, May 03, 2007

For some odd reason I thought that America had mother's day at a different time of year to Australia but I must be wrong since DigitalTrends.com (a US-based site) has just published a gift guide. Must be father's day that is different timing. The gadgets in the guide are in pink, as you would expect but the offerings are pretty rounded and I'd be happy with just about any of them. The auto-vacuum is my top pick. I already know what I'm getting for mother's day - the complete box set of Sex in the City. Well that's one present anyway - you get one per child right? Only kidding. The best present you can give is time.

PC building - without class
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

About a year ago I wrote an editorial about language use by online IT media. Looking back at the old school style I realized how formal the language has become compared to the old days when everything was male-orientated, very casual and possibly crude. Well, it seems as though not everyone has changed their writing style. Just got this email from Driverheaven.net: "Are you a PC building virgin? Don't worry we all had our first time and it really isn't the black art you might think it is. Today Driver Heaven shows you how to pop your electronic cherry and by following our step by step guide you will no longer be a slave to overpriced OEM PC systems." Aaarrh! Can't wait to read the full guide - not!

Longest review of the OQO I've seen so far
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

The-gadgeteer.com have published a huge review of the OQO that starts with the unboxing and follows through to using the device with a huge multimedia collection. It also includes the reviewer's top eight applications they love using on the OQO model 02. "The 02 comes with an icon labeled "Candy". Double-click it and you are brought to a partner's page with special offers for 15% off the price of any Slingbox or accessory, special accessories for those who ordered with Vista, 50% off the price of any Popcap game (I have Chuzzle installed), free Ereader Pro for Windows, and some other special offers! A nice bonus from OQO!"

VIA quietly adds new EPIA model to the line-up
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

There has been no Press Release, no fan-fair, just the subtle addition of a new EPIA model to the list on VPSD's website. EPIACenter.com reports: "According to VIA the EPIA LN series is basically meant to follow-up the lower-end EPIA ML motherboards. While the EPIA ML was never really popular with enthusiasts it was used in several embedded applications and similar environments. Now that the EPIA ML's platform (C3 / CLE266) has become seriously outdated VIA has apparently decided to design the C7 / CN700 based EPIA LN." You can check out the specifications here.

Hello from an OQO
Tuesday, May 01, 2007

Two sleek little boxes arrived on the doorstep this morning from Tegatech.com.au. Our OQO model 02 is finally here. John immediately ran out the door for a quick hair cut to make himself presentable so that we could film a video of the unpacking. I'll edit it tomorrow so you can take a look. Right now I am posting this blog from the OQO, trying to get used to the little slide out keyboard. It's faster than typing SMS on a mobile and more comfortable than the on-screen keyboards I've used with other UMPCs. Some of the keys are used for 3 things so I am just getting used to where everything is. The whole unit is smaller than I imagined, even having watched videos of it. The quality of the workmanship and design is very impressive. I am going to enjoy exploring this device in depth.
