When will Google be doing hardware?
Monday, July 09, 2007

I've been asking myself that question for years but it still hasn't happened. TheTechZone explores the question: "Google has also produced a variety of applications designed specifically for the mobile environment. Gmail comes in a mobile version that is better suited for the smaller screens of Pocket PC devices. Google Maps have worked very well with KDDI cell phones in Japan, though they have yet to make quite as big a splash in North America. With all of this "software" development, Google is starting to look like the new Microsoft, so... you've got to wonder, when will Google finally take the next logical step and actually produce some branded hardware?" Read on.

VIA nanoBook and Packard Bell Easy Note XS video
Friday, July 06, 2007

In the style of an un-boxing video (one person with the device, pointing out all of the features) Bjorn from UltraMobileLife.com has filmed himself with a sample of the VIA NanoBook reference design and the Packard Bell Easy Note XS, which is the first commercial design, set to be available in Europe later this month. These are the units that were first shown at the VIA Technology Forum last month. They were really well received by the media at the event who were lugging around full notebooks from meeting to meeting. The units are aiming to retail for US$599.

What is open source?
Wednesday, July 04, 2007

This article is for the less, well less techie among us: "Mention open source to most computer users and you’ll receive a blank stare. Talk to a techie and his eyes will light up. For far too long, open source has been the province of the geeks, who have been eager to embrace its workings and improve it. But these days, open source is becoming something for everyone. So what is open source, anyway? It’s software, available to anyone, where the code that makes it run is openly displayed, and often of much better quality than you’ll find in commercially available ware, as people contribute to improve it. Best of all, it’s free to download and distribute." Read on at DigitalTrends.com.

New Amtek UMPC reviewed
Wednesday, July 04, 2007

TabletPCBuzz.com have reviewed the new T700 UMPC from Amtek: "Using Windows Vista on this particular UMPC was simply a joy. It was stable, and the improved handwriting recognition made text entry much more efficient than in other devices using Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Having multiple applications open and switching from window to window was no problem. While many new computers come bogged down with an excess of utilities that have owners battling for control of their machines, the T770 did not have this "feature."" The unit features: 1.2GHZ VIA C7M NaNo Processor • 1GB RAM • 40GB hard drive • 7" touch screen, native 800x480 resolution with 800x600 and 1024x600 emulation • 802.11b/g wireless • built-in USB Bluetooth • 2400mAh battery

Devon IT launches new thin client notebook
Wednesday, July 04, 2007

"From the looks of it, the new SafeBook retains many of the same specs as its predecessor, including a 12.1-inch display and VIA C7-M processor, with the notable addition of 3G AirCard support this time around, along with 802.11 a/b/g WiFi. Despite those additions, this model actually boasts a lower starting price than before, now coming in at $599..." Source: Engadget.com.
