Hands on with the new Medion UMPC
Friday, May 11, 2007

UMPCPortal.com takes a test drive of the new Medion UMPC: "Firstly, and very importantly, VIA appear to have done a good job with the new VX700 / UniChrome video drivers. Windows Media player and Origami experience worked well. The best we've seen on a 'Vista on VIA' device yet. This bodes well for the OQO and T770 and I guess all future VIA devices. Media Center was about the only thing that didn't perform and to be honest, I'm not surprised. Media Center is a real heavyweight program. After installing a few drivers, Xvid at 2mbps was perfect through the Windows Media Player - more than enough quality for the 6.5" screen." read more here.

Small, silent, low powered, secure, environmentally friendly computing solution
Thursday, May 10, 2007

A new US start up company is launching the Zonbu Zonbox toward the end of the year - a $100-$250 computer with a $13/month service for encrypted back-ups. "The Zonbox is an extremely small device that appears to measure about 6 x 8 inches, and to stand about two inches tall. It weighs only two pounds and is relatively rugged, since it lacks a fragile hard disk drive. It consumes 15 Watts (average), or 131 kW/year, generating about 97 pounds of CO2 emissions, according to Zonbu. To "completely eliminate the carbon footprint" of the Zonbox, Zonbu will buy "regulatory grade carbon offsets" from Climate Trust, the company said." It features the VIA C7 processor and runs Gentoo Linux with a host of other open source software worth $2000. To find out more, read the article on LinuxDevices.com

First Pico-ITX mod - in a Gameboy!
Thursday, May 10, 2007

I just got a very excited sounding email from Christoph over at EPIACenter.com. He wrote to draw my attention to a new EPIA case mod. "Thought you might like it!" he says. Well, I have to say I am totally blown away by this one. A Japanese website, T-Zone have put a sample VIA EPIA PX10000G Pico-ITX into a 1989 model Gameboy. It runs Windows XP off a 4GB compact flash drive that slots in where the gameboy game cartridges usually slot in. On one side there are two USB ports and on the other there's an Ethernet port and VGA out. Cooling is achieved by leaving the space where the LCD usually is, blank. Simply fantastic!

To be a Pro Gamer
Wednesday, May 09, 2007

"Gaming, it’s a term that means many things to many people. Gaming like anything else exists on a spectrum. On one hand, there is gaming at its least concentration. This is what is known as casual gaming. On the other hand, there is gaming at its most and most serious concentration. This is what we call tournament or pro gaming. But, is the spectrum even that easily defined? Is there much of a difference between the two? What is it that makes a gamer “Pro.”" I would say it's 1) talent and 2) the luxury of being able to devote enough time to it and 3) having the finances to attend events. But read on to see what BonaFideReviews.com has to say.
