Green computing catching on
Monday, March 05, 2007

Christoph from EPIACenter.com admits that he had doubts that "anyone would be successful in making "green" products sexy no matter what marketing budget they threw at it. So I had my doubts when VIA Technologies started using terms like "green" and "carbon free" in their press releases. But I guess things are slowly changing. In times when films like Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth are box-office hits and win an Oscar or when people are getting excited about Live Earth concerts (I'm actually thinking of heading up to London to attend it) also the PC market is slowly starting to deal with being more environmentally friendly." He goes on to quote figures from a Greenpeace survey which asked people if they would be willing to pay extra for a green PC. Interesting information.

An example of how to be green
Monday, March 05, 2007

"Extending its ‘carbon-free’ CPU concept, Taiwanese motherboard chip maker VIA Technologies has announced a carbon-free PC reference design. Part of the firm’s pc-1 initiative, the design calls for its 20W C7-M processor, VN800 north bridge, VT8237R south bridge and a laptop-sized (2.5in.) serial ATA hard drive." VIA includes a carbon offset processor for the power draw on the life of the processor and is also careful to include a powder coated (not spray painted) case. Source: ElectronicsWeekly.com.

"The Gigabyte U60 features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard so that text entry is an absolute breeze, and it'll be making its official debut at CeBit 2007 later this month. Under the hood, the Gigabyte U60 packs a Via C7-M mobile processor, your choice of a 20GB or 30GB hard drive (both 1.8-inchers), integrated 802.11b/g WiFi, a pair of USB ports, and a good-sized 6.5-inch color screen. The SD/MMC memory card slot will also come in handy, I'm sure." Source: MobileMag.com.

Road Trip!
Friday, March 02, 2007

(For those of you who don't know, John and I are based in Melbourne Australia). Last year we got a call from a group called Kattlegear. They were having a problem with a system using an EPIA EN mainboard. The system they designed used a computer (using the EPIA EN) to control the gates and other functions in a cattle station where the cattle are weighed and injected against disease. We thought, what a fascinating use of EPIA boards. John fixed their issue last year but ever since we have both been interested to actually see it in action. So next Wednesday we're off on a road trip that will take us from Melbourne through to Shepparton where we will stop to pick up some GPS software for the UMPC from a friend and then on to Narrendera for the night. The following day we'll drive on to Dubbo and attend the NSW Beef Spectacular. So long as there's steak John will enjoy himself. On Friday we'll drive to Gooloodong and actually see one of the cattle stations in action and meet with a farmer who has purchased one.

Now along the way we will blog, take videos, interview people and collect information for articles. This will all be done using a Samsung Q1b UMPC which features the VIA C7-M ULV processor. No laptops, no dekstops, just working on the road with a UMPC. The Samsung Q1b UMPC will kindly be provided by Hugo Ortega and Tegatech Australia. The log for this trip will start as of Monday next week. Stay tuned.

Explaining the Digital Divide
Friday, March 02, 2007

"While surfing around for any late-breaking news related to the global digital divide I chanced upon a site that I hadn't encountered before, and upon seeing it, I instantly added it into our extensive links directory. Although I believe this site is still in it's infancy stages, there's some good content at digitaldivide.org that grabbed my attention. Firstly, I was particularly impressed with this introduction to the digital divide phenomenon, covering issues such as why it exists, the resulting consequences and even some of the efforts are being taken to rememdy the situation. Among their assertions regarding why the digital divide matters is an issue I'd never before considered, and it opened my eyes." Find out what that was at VIApc-1.com.
