| | VIA making good competition in ultra mobile space Tuesday, January 16, 2007 Rob from GottaBeMobile.com has written up a dot point list of thoughts about UMPCs, inspired by recent experiences at CES. He notes: "Intel vs Via - Via is making huge strides in the UMPC arena. From Medion to the eo TuffTab and other devices announced, it is clear that processor choice is benefitting the consumer at the ultra portable level. I see their impact continuing to improve." | |

| "UMPC v2" shots from CES Tuesday, January 16, 2007 The OQO model 02 certainly captured a lot of the lime light at CES last week but engadget.com reports that there was less news on UMPCs than they thought there would be. Still, their gallery is filled with a lot of "UMPC v2" shots. | |
| The first year of the UMPC Monday, January 15, 2007 Back in February 2006, almost one year ago, I got to see a UMPC in action for the first time at E3. VIA was demonstrating a sample on their booth. Although I didn't get any personal time with it, I thought that it did look very interesting. At that stage I wasn't too sure where in the market it was going to fit and I wondered, who would really buy a handheld personal computer? Could it possibly replace a notebook? I knew it wasn't going to replace a desktop. I have my laptop which I can use for gaming and surfing the internet and as a movie and DVD player. I also have my PSP which I use for both gaming and movies. So although the UMPC looked interesting at the time, it really didn't excite me that much. Then at Computex in June, I got to spend a bit more time using the product and hearing other people's ideas about it. I was lucky enough to be able to take one home. The more I used it the more I fell in love with it and the more potential I realized the ultra portable device market has. Read more. | |

| | About the VIA pc-1 2500 system Friday, January 12, 2007 The Editor of the viapc-1.com. website talks about his experiences with a sample VIA pc-1 system - systems typically being targeted for the developing world or rural areas of the developed world: "Several months ago I received a sample VIA pc-1 pc2500 desktop system, sporting VIA’s carbon neutral C7-D processor. Initially, my plan was to write up a product review of sorts and publish that in a relatively short space of time. So I installed Windows XP and set it up as my new work computer and began using it for everything that my previous work system performed. Despite the significant difference in the price tag between the two systems (the pc-1 system costs about AU$2000 less), I continued to note that the pc-1 system was capable of doing almost everything that my other system could do. The only applications that the pc2500 didn’t seem to want to perform admirably are some recently released high-end 3D video games. This hardly seemed noteworthy because these machines haven’t been built with a gaming audience in mind, so I continued looking for other differences. So far I have found very few that go against the pc2500 system." Read on here. | |
