It also has microphone and speaker ports, two USB ports and a USB slot. It said a number of OEMs will produce versions of the design in the second half of this year."

Mobile-ITX video
Saturday, June 09, 2007

Every year at the annual VIA Technology Forum (VTF), VIA's Wenchi Chen takes something amazing out of his pocket. Last year he pulled a Pico-ITX out of his pocket and this year it was Mobile-ITX - a fully integrated motherboard (processor included) that is smaller than a business card! The Mobile-ITX features a VIA C7-M ULV S processor. The S stands for small. It also features the VIA VX700 single chip solution, CDMA, built in memory, USB, audio, display connector and I/O connector. Imagine an x86 platform inside a mobile phone or a blackberry! Or imagine the extra room a UMPC designer would have with a board that small! In this video you can watch Wenchi Chen reveal the Mobile-ITX solution at VTF earlier this week.

Fatal1ty plays Quake III on the OQO model 02
Saturday, June 09, 2007

For the past couple of years, FiringSquad.com has put on a party for media and manufacturers during the week of Computex. This year they organized a mammoth gaming competition, had a huge swag of goodies to give away, free drink, free food and also the opportunity to meet with and play against the most well known professional fps gamer there is, Johnathan Falal1ty Wendel. There were a few of us there from VIA and two of us had OQO model 02 UMPCs on us. John's of course has a lot of games installed. 'Have you seen these?' he asked Fatal1ty, handing him the OQO with Quake III firing up. Fatal1ty loved it. Media cameras went nuts.

US NanoBook distributor named?
Friday, June 08, 2007

Tech.promaxim.com reports: "Engadget Chinese just went hands-on with the Via NanoBook at Computex. Better yet, they seem to have unearthed the other, US-bound OEM: FIC (First International Computer) as it’s known in Taiwan, or Everex as we know ‘em Stateside. Makes sense given Everex’s penchant for VIA C7-M procs in their StepNote series of laptops. The FIC CE260 they played with even had a prototype Skype-phone module in place of that oddball world clock insert seen previously."

Just like being there yourself
Thursday, June 07, 2007

To know all there is to know about what EPIA boards VIA has on display at their booth at Computex this year, look no further than the photos and video on EPIACenter.com. "FIC is also working on a CN896 based Mini-ITX motherboard, however I'm not quite sure whether they're any real differences between the CNI896 and the EPIA SN, apart from the layout of the audio-connectors on the I/O panel that is."

"Gigabyte U60 UMPC looks promising"
Thursday, June 07, 2007

Tweaktown.com report from Computex Taipei: "Back at the Gigabyte booth they were showing off their new U60 UMPC (ultra mobile PC) which is based on VIA’s C7-M lower power sucking 1GHz processor. It comes with a total of 768MB DDR-2 memory, 6.5” TFT display which is capable of 800 x 480 resolution through VIA’s VX700 graphics GPU. Probably best of all it only weighs 740 grams and that is including the 30GB 5,400 RPM hard drive and 2-cell battery."

VIA Technology forum 2007 - the dawning of the Ultra Mobility Age
Wednesday, June 06, 2007

This morning I attended the opening keynotes speeches of the eighth annual VIA Technology Forum (VTF). The theme for the event was Ultra Mobility. PC 2.0, Web 2.0 and the Mobility 2.0 lifestyle were the types of terms being used by the speakers. The atmosphere was one of anticipation and optimism, as well as progress and success - of taking something to the next level, the next stage. VIA's CEO and President, Wenchi Chen, revealed the Mobile-ITX platform - smaller than a business card.

In a later speech, Roger Yuen, Vice President for Asia and Global Operations, Packard Bell, revealed their EasyNote XS UMPC, based on VIA's NanoBook reference design. Otto Berkes from from Microsoft stated that he believes the UMPC will redefine what we call a personal computer. Don't get stuck in the PC 1.0 world - read up on the ultra mobile revolution coverage from VTF.

The OQO model 02 takes to the road
Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Rob from GottaBeMobile.com takes the OQO model 02 for a road trip: "It has been a long time since I've been able to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed a tablet pc, but the OQO Model 02 brought that joy back for me this past week. With its small size, easy to use keyboard, snappy processor, and active digitizer, my experience has been nothing but positive. I'm going to really enjoy using my own OQO Model 02 within the next few weeks." He has also put up a photo gallery of the trip. Like photos admiring your first born, the OQO smiles and says cheese from all kinds of unlikely positions.

VIA Press Release: VIA Mobile-ITX Mainboard Will Expedite PC2.0 Transition
Wednesday, June 06, 2007

"“Moving beyond the traditional desktop PCs and notebooks of the PC1.0 era, there is an eruption of form factor, application and service innovation, out of which a new generation of devices is emerging that we call PC2.0, which are more accessible, more convenient and more connected than ever before,” commented Wenchi Chen, President and CEO of VIA Technologies, Inc. “The main areas experiencing this rapid growth are in connected clients for the home as well as the enterprise, emerging market devices, green technology, and, of course, the exciting young field of ultra mobile devices.”

Enabling this transition are the proliferation of ubiquitous intelligence and broadband access, as well as exponential innovation on the hardware side from providers such as VIA and its customers, and the provision of richer content and applications and innovative services. On the hardware side, VIA’s leadership in miniaturization, power efficiency, rich digital media integration and full x86 compatibility gave it a strong edge on providing the platforms to help drive the transition, as they enable the smaller, lighter, quieter, more energy efficient, more portable and more affordable devices required."
