| HD disc player war solved Wednesday, May 16, 2007 "While the HD format war rages on, some companies are finding innovative and compelling product offerings. Unveiled at the 2007 International CES, the LG "Super Multi Blue" Player (model BH100) is the world's first dual-format high-definition DVD player, which plays back both Blu-ray Discs and HD DVDs. It is now available at national retail stores, such as Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA, as well as regional retailers, local dealers, and online." I didn't even know that any dual devices were going to be made! Read the review at DigitalTrends.com. | |
| | Another positive OQO review Tuesday, May 15, 2007 I don't know how many OQO model 02s have been sold but I somehow get the impression that a lot of people who do buy one end up writing a review or blogging about their experiences. I feel like I am coming across these little reviews every day: "The OQO model 02 move the UMPC space from a novelty vaporware into an actual work horse worth carrying. I have been using the OQO 02 for a few days now and been running it through its paces. Here is how I operate so you know exactly how I am using it." Read on... | |
| Pocket sized love Tuesday, May 15, 2007 GottaBeMobile.com writes: "Ahh, love is in the air. I know, I know, some of you are going to think this is very, very weird, but ya know what -- we don't really care at the GottaBeMobile East Coast headquarters. Ya gotta be a techno geek to really undersatand anyway. Splotch is in love. He has been on a quest to find a perfect mobile mate that is just his size and can keep up, and well --- he may just have found it in the OQO model 02. There are little piles of blue drool all over the place." I can relate. In fact John and I have been fighting over the right to drool over the OQO we have here. | |
| A borg-like existence Tuesday, May 15, 2007 Yesterday I chatted with some fellow students as we waited for our Feature Writing class to start. We were talking about resources that we regularly use for our writing. Jill commented that she goes to the library to use the Internet since she doesn't have broadband at home. My friend Chris who writes freelance for a PC magazine exclaimed "What?! You're sitting between two geeks. That's like saying you never keep any food at your house!" I couldn't help but agree but at the same time I did feel a little arrogant. After all, not everyone can afford broadband at home. But surely other things could be sacrificed to afford broadband!? I love books but for a quick check or reference you just can't beet the Internet. Am I too reliant on it? Kevin Kell of Wired magazine wrote an article about how the world will look back on the dawn of the Web 2.0 era. He wrote: "his will be recognized as the largest, most complex, and most surprising event on the planet. Weaving nerves out of glass and radio waves, our species began wiring up all regions, all processes, all facts and notions into a grand network. From this embryonic neural net was born a collective interface for our civilization, a sensing, cognitive device with power that exceeded any previous invention. The Machine provided a new way of thinking (perfect search, total recall) and a new mind for an old species." Sounds more like the opening to a science fiction novel or an explanation of how the borg species from Star Trek developed. But maybe it is the reality for more and more of us. | |
| | Running a little sluggish? Monday, May 14, 2007 "Many computer users forget that Windows comes with a nifty system utility that is called Disk Defragmenter. | | New video: The OQO model 02's docking station (etc) Friday, May 11, 2007
There are a lot of accessories available for the OQO model 02. The docking station can make the unit into a desktop PC - one that you plug into the docking station and use with a regular keyboard, mouse and monitor - and then unplug and use as a UMPC when you're away from your desk. In this video we check out the battery of the OQO and the docking station, ending with plugging the unit into an HDTV via the HDMI port. | |
