Hand held gaming
Tuesday, April 17, 2007

"An enterprising user put a Nintendo 64 emulator on his TabletKiosk eo UMPC v7110 and loaded up Super Smash Brothers. This really shows that the UMPC is quite a powerful handheld entertainment system. The key layout lends itself well to gameplay and there's plenty of games that will play well on the system. Not only that but movies play very well on the 7" screen." Check out the embedded link to the YouTube video at UltraMobileLife.com.

"VIA has kept plugging away" - pays off
Tuesday, April 17, 2007

ZDNet's John Spooner contemplates VIA's recent design win with HP in China: "The chipmaker is best-known for its chipsets. However, its C7 processor line has caught on in some areas. One of those areas is in low-price notebooks. Several manufacturers have adopted the C7-M for their machines. Wal-Mart, for one, is offering an Everex StepNote notebook with a 1.5GHz C7-M for $498." He goes on to speculate: "Will HP create a trend with its dx2020? It remains to be seen. One thing is for sure. PC makers are offering small, low power desktops for markets such as China in an effort to differentiate."

VIA scores big with HP deal
Monday, April 16, 2007

"Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. may be locked in a vicious price war over desktop and mobile chips, but that hasn't stopped Taiwan's Via Technologies Inc. from gaining ground in the market with its focus on low-cost processors that don't draw much power.

The latest win for the Taiwanese chip company came from Hewlett-Packard Co., the world's largest PC maker, which plans to sell a low-power desktop PC in China based on a Via microprocessor. HP uses Via chips for thin-client computers, but this is the first time the company has put a Via processor inside a full-fledged PC.

The Compaq dx2020, unveiled on Friday, is based on Via's 1.5GHz C-7D processor, which consumes a miserly 20 watts of power or less, and is designed for corporate users, rather than consumers. The new PC is a significant design win for the Taiwanese semiconductor company and an important endorsement of its focus on the production of energy-efficient processors.

The dx2020 is also the first desktop PC from a top-tier vendor that's based on a Via processor." Source: WashingtonPost.com.

No more Windows XP on new machines
Monday, April 16, 2007

Microsoft apparently intends on releasing a mandate that no new PCs can ship with Windows XP pre-installed as of January next year. "The move may not sit well with some, especially small business customers who don't tend to upgrade PCs in droves and might not want to mix and match Vista and XP systems. Dell told APC that it intends to continue pre-loading Windows XP on its Dimension and Inspiron machines until the summer—a good few months before the Microsoft deadline. By then, Dell could also start offering Linux-based desktops and laptops as it promised late last month, which may provide an escape route for users who don't want to make the move to Microsoft's new OS."
