EPIA PE to replace PD models
Friday, January 19, 2007

EPIACenter.com reports: "Today I saw that VIA has posted their new motherboard catalogue for Q1/2007. We know all of the boards it contains, except for the EPIA PE which is set to replace the EPIA PD. There are only minimal changes in terms of specifications and I assume that the biggest change is RoHS compliance. Additionally VIA apparently decided that a 600MHz version isn't needed anymore so instead of having an EPIA PD6000E and PD10000 there will only be an EPIA PE10000G with a 1GHz CPU."

Musical innovations
Thursday, January 18, 2007

14UNews.com were of course at CES this year. One product they caught in action was the PureJoy alongside the AudioPint. In fact "product" is probably not the right word as neither of these inventions are for sale - as yet. They are the innovations of MIT students. The PureJoy is like a joystick that allows you to record several music tracks and overlap them. It's demonstrated in 14U's video. More information about the devices can be found on the InventMusic.org website: "This week I took a setup with four PureJoys and the development AudioPint system to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. My trip was sponsored by VIA, the Taiwanese company that makes the small motherboards that run the AudioPint. We were all set up at an off-site location just across the street from the main Las Vegas convention center, and received a healthy flow of press in two 2.5-hour sessions on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the commercial nature of CES, the most common question that I got was "so what are you selling?" I think that my response of "nothing, at the moment" caught people off-guard, and was a breath of fresh air to many."

Recycling your PC
Thursday, January 18, 2007

WhatPC.co.uk has some useful advice and information for anyone looking to buy a new PC - that is the importance of either recycling dead hardware or donating hardware that still works whilst still keeping your data safe. The article includes facts about just how much e-waste from computing hits landfill in the UK, as well as detailing the sound reasons consumers need to look at making sure their old PCs don't end up there as well. "But if the PC is of a reasonable specification, which currently means one with at least a Pentium III processor and a hard disk of 6GB or larger, you could donate it to Computer Aid International who will blank your data, refurbish the hardware and ensure the computer is put to good use in the developing world. More than 70,000 computers have been recycled in this way."

Dell joins VIA's tree loving attitude
Wednesday, January 17, 2007

Similar to VIA's Carbon offset program and the TreeMark system, "...Dell has announced it will plant sufficient trees to absorb all the atmospheric carbon dioxide generated by power plants producing the electricity used to drive its computers for a three-year period. The scheme, dubbed Plant a Tree for Me, will see notebook and desktop buyers given the chance to donate $2 or $6, respectively, to fund Dell's arboreal activity. Or rather Dell will pass the money on to non-profit organisations that will handle the planting, in sustainably managed forests." Reported on RegHardware.co.uk.

VIA-based instore kiosk to sell Zune and Vista
Wednesday, January 17, 2007

ZuneUserGroup.com reports on the Lunch at Piero's event last week in Vegas: "VIA (motherboard maker) is a regular exhibitor and one of their products is used in the Impart Media IQ-mini-Z micro kiosk seen in this image. Impart Media is Microsoft's official in-store interactive marketing partner and the IQ-mini-Z merchandising system uses an LCD touch screen that is driven by Microsoft Windows XP Embedded platform. These displays will be used for both Zune and Vista in-store sales."

XYZ Computing visit VIA in Vegas
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

"At CES this year VIA took over the Lunch at Piero's event..." What captured XYZComputing.com's eye was the pico-ITX developers' kits on display. "Looking at the specifications for the system we can clearly see that VIA is aiming this form factor more at consumers than at industrial users. The four USB ports, DVI and TV-out, high definition audio, and video decoders mean VIA is following in the trend of Mini-ITX and giving us something that is friendly with hobbyists and home users." They were also intrigued by the environmentally friendly offering: "This product (also available in white) was VIA's Carbon Free PC, an earth-friendly model that is RoHS compliant, consumes a limited amount of power, has a high power-per-watt rating, and uses the VIA C7-M ULV processor. It is scalable to be Windows Vista ready, though some upgrades (memory, etc.) will be needed."
