VIA teams up with CPU makers
Thursday, December 20, 2007

VIA has been getting really busy with its latest partnership. This time VIA has joined forces with First International Computer Inc. according to CENS. The mutual goal is “to launch a budget-price laptop using VIA's C7M processor.” This affordable notebook computer is being marketed at only US$199 and is available at Wal-Mart. What’s more is that “Taiwan's own CPU makers are also keen to grasp the opportunities brought by low-price laptops. VIA Technologies Inc. and RDC Semiconductor Co., for example, have developed products which, they hope, will help them establish a foothold in the global market.”

Cloudbook vs Eee PC
Tuesday, December 18, 2007

It seems to be inevitable that the upcoming Everex Cloudbook UMPC is compared to the Asus Eee PC. Here's a comment I have read several times now:

"Looks better than the EEE PC if you ask me."

Both units run open source software. The Cloudbook features a card reader and DVI out. More importantly I think for most people, it has a 30GB hard drive where as the Eee PC only has 4-8GB flash storage. This provides much greater scope for using it offline. The whole concept of the Eee PC is that it is to be used as an always-connected device, with storage of files online. I think a lot of people are not quite ready for that inevitable step yet.

Safe mobility
Tuesday, December 18, 2007

The Devon IT Safebook is a laptop that basically runs everything by remote and stores all files remotely. In that way if the laptop itself is stolen, there is no data on it of any value. This type of mobile computing solution is perfect for medical records, accountants and any industry that deals with sensitive information. It's all explained in this video from Mini PC Pro.

Don't leave home without it
Monday, December 17, 2007

It's the end of the year and everyone is taking stock of what has been and what they expect for 2008. UMPCs have gained wider acceptance over the course of 2007, but it hasn't been THE year of the UMPC - except perhaps for the niche market of busy executives who always need a device at their fingertips to record gold nuggets of foresight for posterity. One VP who fits the bill is Richard Brown, who in the true style of blogging, comments on another online publication ... and here I am continuing the thread of thought:

""OQO’s Model e2 seems to be a hit with both travelling executives and IT staff, perhaps because it really does offer the facilities of a full PC in a pocket-sized format. If more UMPC designs can emulate its success, there could be wider adoption in future.” As an avid OQO enthusiast myself, I fully concur with their verdict. I wouldn’t go anywhere without it."

How much does it cost to run a Zonbu?
Monday, December 17, 2007

The Green Lounge have got their hands on a comprehensive power meter and used it to test the power draw of a Zonbu unit. The power meter comes with a software package that allows you to use the data it collects to predict the average monthly power consumption, and by adding in your cost of electricity, you can predict the average monthly cost to run a device. I was shocked at just how cheap the Zonbu is to run. I am looking forward to seeing the results of this test done on other PCs for comparison.

Zonbu Nation - Part 3
Friday, December 14, 2007

This video is part 3 of the Zonbu Nation series from Technovoyance. It's been one week since the two Zonbutants were given their tiny PCs that run Linux. There comments about the Zonbu system are interesting. What does a Linux expert think of a Linux system designed for non-experts and what does a computer user who has never laid eyes on Linux before think of it?
