After the success of the video about WoW on the OQO, John decided to try an RPG game. Actually a lot of people asked what other games were like on the little UMPC. Watch this video to see how StarCraft plays.

OQO movie
Friday, May 18, 2007

I have gotten so used to YouTube videos that are a maximum of ten minutes long that the OQO video on UberTablet.Blogspot.com was a bit of a shock to the system! It's a very detailed overview of the OQO model 02 UMPC and all of its snazzy features. If you are considering buying a unit then it's well worth the forty minute viewing time.

An environmentally friendly way to heat your study
Friday, May 18, 2007

"It seems that high end video cards from ATI and NVIDIA keep on getting hotter. Today we break out the uber geeky infrared digital laser pyrometer to find out just how hot some of these cards get when it comes to the exhaust air and PCB area behind the core of the GPU. The results were a tad shocking and it's obvious that these high end graphics card can easily increase the room temperature when used in a small home office or dorm room!"

Now far be it for me to spoil the fun and stop you from reading the entire article on LegitReview.com, but let's skip ahead for a moment. One of the video cards in this test was pumping out air at 65 degrees Celcius, almost 150 Fahrenheit. It's just heading toward winter here and my feet are getting cold. I think I might get one and leave the side off my case right under the desk for some free heating!

New VIA Falcon IDE Storage Device driver
Friday, May 18, 2007

The VIA Falcon IDE Storage Device driver supports eSATA on:

the SATA controllers featured in the VT8237, VT8237R, VT8237R Plus, VT8237A, VT8251 South Bridges;
the SATA controllers featured in the VX700 and CX700 single chip solutions;
the SATA controllers featured in the VT6421 and VT6410 discrete solutions.

But now the VIA Falcon IDE Storage Device driver also supports hot-plug for SATA drives as well! Previously, hot-plug support was provided via the PATA/SATA driver - but that's gone now. We've simplified things and merge that driver into the VIA Falcon IDE Storage Device driver.

Version 2.10A, out now, supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP x64, Windows Server 2003 x64, Windows Vista 32 bit and Windows Vista 64 bit. You can read more about it here.

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

World of Warcraft just got mobile and we've got the videos to prove it. In this two part video, John boots up World of Warcraft on an OQO model 02 UMPC and takes his level 70 character to a few different worlds. Their is some killing, some looting and some auction stuff going on. The little unit handles the game remarkably well - but John needs some practice controlling World of Warcraft with his thumbs! Take a look at the videos here.

Another UMPC we've seen before
Wednesday, May 16, 2007

"Sungju Computer recently came up with a new UMPC, which is said to be integrated with GPS…. , and looks just like the Medion device or Gigabyte U60,. Tango Wings features a complete sliding keyboard. Like the Medion and Gigabyte, this latest UMPC runs Windows Vista Home Premium. Tango Wings consists of a 1.8? 30GB HDD, 802.11 b/g wireless, 6.5? WVGA screen, 768MB RAM, all operated by a VIA C7-M 770 processor. This latest UMPC is consisted with bluetooth 2.0, built-in speakers plus a web cam." The photo on MobileMastee.net actually looks almost exactly the same as the one on Gigabyte's website.

Gigabyte, VIA and Taiwan's largest telecommunications provider bring Mobility 2.0 to Taiwan
Wednesday, May 16, 2007

VIA has announced that "with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecommunications provider, and GIGABYTE, a leading IT industry brand, a strategic alliance to deliver high speed 3.5G services for UMDs (Ultra Mobile Devices) powered by the VIA C7-M Ultra Mobile Platform. As a result of this alliance, business users and consumers in Taiwan will be able to enjoy a complete Internet experience by connecting the GIGABYTE U60, a small and light VIA C7-M processor-based UMD running Microsoft Windows Vista, to Chunghwa Telecom’s island-wide HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) network."

The Press Release goes to coin what I belive is a new phrase, the "Mobility 2.0 Lifestyle":
"The Mobility 2.0 lifestyle moves people beyond today’s limited mobile Internet to a full-featured Web 2.0 browsing and computing experience at their fingertips through the next generation of Ultra Mobile Devices. Weighing under a kilogram, UMDs are based on the x86 architecture and bridge the gap between the notebook and the mobile phone, bringing the benefits of a PC with all the applications, information and entertainment users require to an ultra portable handheld form factor."

Plus, information about the UMPC itself:
"The GIGABYTE U60 Ultra Mobile Device is based on the power efficient VIA C7-M Ultra Mobile Platform and comes with Microsoft Windows Vista Business, Home Premium or Home Basic or Windows XP. Combining a VIA C7-M Ultra Mobile Processor running at speeds up to 1.5GHz and the VIA VX700 system media processor with UniChrome Pro II IGP integrated graphics, the GIGABYTE U60 provides powerful computing functionality and a rich multimedia and entertainment experience all in an ultra compact form factor weighing less than 800 grams and delivering long lasting battery life."
